Knowlton, Elizabeth

She was born Feb. 19, 1914 in Jamestown, the daughter
of Lambert F. and Althea M. Wheeler Pope. She was a 1931
graduate of Clymer High School and earned a bachelor's
of science degree from the State College at Fredonia in
1965. She taught school at Busti No. 7 for two years,
Conewango for one year, Lakewood for one year and second
and third grades at Sherman Central School for 20 years,
retiring in 1976. She was a member of the Lakewood United
Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher, treasurer and former
superintendent of the primary department. She was a member of the Lakewood Volunteer
Fire Department Auxiliary, a past president and life member of the Lakewood Parent-Teacher
Association, a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the American
Association of Retired Persons and a chartered member of the Chautauqua Lake Campers Club.
She is survived by two daughters, Ann Chamberlain of Stow, Ohio and Betty Jo Wilbur of
Lynn Haven, Fla.; two sons, Jackson W. Knowlton of Lakewood and Theodore F. Knowlton of
Pittsburgh; eight grandchildren, W. Craig Wilbur of Florida, Chris L. Wilbur of Columbia,
S.C., Michelle L. Grimes of Talmadge, Ohio, Licia A. Danford of Akron, Ohio, Connie L.
Mason of Davie, Fla., Cynthia L. Gleason of Ashville, Cathy Card of Jamestown and
Catherine Knowlton of Pittsburgh; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Herman L. Knowlton, whom she married Aug. 19, 1937 and who died
Nov. 8, 2001; and two sisters, Dorothy Cowden and Margaret Grassi.
The funeral service will be held Feb. 18th in the Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral
Home. The Rev. Elinor Hare, pastor of the Lakewood United Methodist Church, will
officiate. Burial will be in Bentley-Lakewood Cemetery. Friends will be received from
6 to 8 p.m. today and one hour prior to the service Friday in the funeral home.
