Nalbone, John J. Sr.
John J. Nalbone Sr., 93, retired owner/operator of Dunkirk Aviation, passed away peacefully
Monday, Oct 31, 2011, at Brooks Hospital, surrounded by his family.
He was born on May 13, 1918, in Anita, Pa., the youngest child of the late Charles
and Clara (Lucania) Nalbone.
Raised in Jamestown, N.Y., where his family had relocated, John became interested in
flying "when I was first able to see," and he took his first airplane ride in 1931
at the age of 13. John recalls that flight cost him 65 cents and from that moment on,
he was hooked on flying.
Following graduation from Jamestown High School in 1938, John enrolled
in the Civilian Pilot Training Program, where he received his private pilot
license.
In 1941, after marrying Susan Galofaro from Dunkirk, he was sent to
Leroy, N.Y., to undertake a secondary instruction course under the auspices
of a government training program. He received his commercial license
there, and then enrolled in a two-month long school in Reading, Pa, where
he earned his flight instructor's license.
In late 1941, after America entered World War II, John enlisted in the
U.S. Army. Soon, John was assigned to the 54th Flight training attachment
at Dorr Field in Arcadia, Fla., as a primary flight instructor. John taught
primary flight instruction in Stearman biplanes until the end of World
War II.
With help from the G.I. Bill, John, his wife Sue, and their small son
Johnny, relocated to Sue's hometown of Dunkirk, N.Y., where he opened his
own flight school at Werle Field, a small grass strip, equipped with runway
lights, which John mowed in the summer, and plowed in the winter.
In 1947, John was appointed a pilot examiner, and found that he could
make a living by flight instruction, giving pilot exams and rebuilding
airplanes.
In 1960, John became the manager of the adjacent Dunkirk Airport, and he
entered into a long-term lease with the city of Dunkirk. John began to
construct several large hangars there at his own expense while he and his
wife, Sue, began applying for government grants that would allow the money
received to be allocated for airport improvements such as much needed
runway resurfacing.
John had flown everything from the Goodyear blimp to Piper Cubs. He constructed
seven homebuilt airplanes, including his favorite, a Steen Skybolt biplane with
which he did aerobatics and skywriting. He enjoyed "buzzing" the Dunkirk Memorial
Day parade with his good friend, Joe San George, who had built an identical
Skybolt.
John's last airplane was a Grumman Tiger, which he flew until he was 85 years
of age. At the time of his retirement, it is estimated that John had given over
5,000 flight exams and had accrued in excess of 30,000 actual hours of flying time.
He had the pleasure of teaching his own sons, several nephews, and all six of
his grandchildren the love of flying.
The recipient of several aviation awards during his career, John received the
Lifetime Achievement Award from the FAA in 1996, and in 2003, the prestigious
Charles Taylor Mechanics Award, presented to aviators with 50 or more continuous
years of service in aviation.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 53
years, the former Susan M. Galofaro; two sisters: Mary Camarata and Christine
Trunzo; and five brothers: Joseph, Peter, Angelo, James and Samuel.
He is survived by three children: John Jr. (Deborah), Linda Liedke (Allan) and
Louis (Janet), all of Fredonia. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Jennifer
Nalbone of Buffalo, Leonard Nalbone (Kara) and Randall Nalbone (Karinne), both of
Jamestown; Jacqueline Gould (Matthew) of Eden, Suzanne Cope (Stephen Mayone) of
Boston, and Jessica Myers (Tim) of Raleigh, N.C. He is further survived by five
great-grandchildren: and very close friend Pasquale (Pat) Guimento of Hamburg,
who had had breakfast with John nearly every Sunday for the past 35 years.
John was also predeceased by very close friend, Charles, "Chuck" Graves of
Dunkirk; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral
Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday morning,
Nov. 4, 2011, at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Dunkirk.
