Salemme, Frank John
Frank John Salemme, 89, of 321 Park St., Jamestown,
passed away unexpectedly Tuesday (May 29, 2012), in
UPMC Hamot Medical Center, Erie, Pa.
A lifelong area resident, he was born Aug. 1, 1922,
in Jamestown, N.Y., a son of the late Salvatore and
Philomena "Fanny" Valburgo Salemme.
He was a 1940 graduate of Jamestown High School, and
was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from Nov. 10,
1943, to Dec. 10, 1945, during World War II. Frank served aboard the USS Sanctuary
in the South Pacific, which was the first battleship to arrive in Nagasaki, Japan
to transport our POW's back to the United States. He continued his Naval career by
serving with the U.S. Naval Reserve as SKC for 20 years. Upon returning from the
service, he married Doris M. Olson on July 26, 1947, in Ss. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic
Church and they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.
In previous years, he was a district manager for the former Atlantic and Pacific
Tea Company (A&P Store) for 39 years. He began his career with A&P as a stock boy
and finished as the district manager in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. When A&P
Stores ceased operations, he then worked as a sales manager for the former S.M.
Flickinger Company, Falconer, N.Y., for 10 years, retiring in 1989.
In his youth, he was an accomplished athlete playing softball and basketball for
several local teams. He also enjoyed golfing, bowling, traveling and loved spending
the winter months in Anna Maria Island, Fla., for 16 years. He was also an avid New
York Yankees fan and was a fan of the Buffalo Bills. He loved animals and enjoyed
his many pets over the years.
He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who
loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. He was a true family man, a kind gentleman, and a friend to many.
Surviving are his wife Doris M. Olson Salemme, with whom he had a 65-year love
affair; his four children: Cynthia (Dennis) Carr, Cathleen (Stephen) Board, Candace
(Michael) Berg and John F. (Brenda) Salemme, all of Jamestown, nine grandchildren:
Andrea (Michael) LeBaron of Kennedy, N.Y., Alicia (Jason) Gates of North East, Pa.,
Joshua (Kristy) Berg of Erie, Pa., Abigail (Douglas) Frazier, Jacob (Carla) Berg,
Joel (Michelle Walrod) Berg, Jordan Berg, Jillian (Ethan Gibbs) Berg and Corine
Salemme, all of Jamestown; 13 great-grandchildren: Mikaela, Andrew and Nolan LeBaron,
Lauren and Alexis Gates, Cayden, Olivia, Adriana and Carson Frazier, Noah Berg,
Brielle and Kinsley Berg and Peyton Gibbs. He is also survived by many nieces and
nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Cosmo J. Salemme
and Raymond F. Salemme; and a sister, Lucia N. "Lucy" Cuifolo.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev.
Dennis W. Mende, pastor of Holy Apostles Parish, will officiate. Burial will
be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today and for one hour prior to the
service on Friday in the funeral home.

Sales, Donna Mae
Donna Mae Sales, 68, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Lakewood, N.Y. and Lottsville,
Pa., passed away on May 19, 2012.
Donna was born May 30, 1943, to Leonard and Shirley Daniel.
She is survived by her husband, Laurence W. Sales; sons: Richard of Ohio,
and Leonard of California; daughters: Susan and Lisa, both of New York; and
grandsons Jamie Sales and Kody Robbins, both of New York.
Donna was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She worked in several clubs
and restaurants in the Lakewood, N.Y. area, and she retired in 2002, after 17
years at Lexington Die Casting in Lakewood, N.Y.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Salzler, Charles T.
Charles T. Salzler, 59, of 95 Boulevard in Celoron, died
at 11:45 a.m. Thursday (Dec. 15, 2011), in WCA Hospital.
He was born March 24, 1952, in Springville, N.Y., a son
of Pansy Nason Salzler and the late James Salzler.
Charlie was a graduate of Eden Central High School, as well
as Jamestown Community College.
An area resident for over 30 years, he was an industrial
electrician employed earlier by the Cummins Engine Co. in
Lakewood (where he was known as "Cambox Charlie") and later
by SKF Bearings in Jamestown.
Charlie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lakewood, the UAW and in
previous years enjoyed coaching the Celoron Blue Jays little league baseball team.
Surviving is his wife, Sandra Szwed Salzler, whom he married Nov. 26, 1977; a
daughter, Dr. Harmony Salzler and her husband, Michael Strauss of Durham, N.C.;
a son, Aaron Salzler of Celoron; a grandson, Cameron Strauss of Durham; his mother,
Pansy Nason Salzler of Eden, N.Y.; eight siblings: Diane (Robert) Wood, Donald
(Nancy) Salzler, Jeanne (Ted) Schweickert, Joanne (Scott) Dexter, Madonna (Mark)
Spitler, Michelle (Ed) Cannizzaro, Robert Salzler and James Salzler; his beloved
dog, Odie; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sacred Heart
Catholic Church. Monsignor Joseph M. Dowdell will be the celebrant.
Friends and family will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in
the Lind Funeral Home, where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 1:45 p.m.

Sample, Thomas D.
GERRY - Thomas D. Sample, 32, of Gerry, died Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011.
He was born Jan. 3, 1979, in Jamestown, the son of Thomas E. and Katherine Dewey
Sample of Gerry.
A Chautauqua County resident most of his life, he was a 1997 graduate of Cassadaga
Valley Central School.
He was employed as a welder for various companies, most recently Hope Windows.
Father of Rayven John Sample of Gerry; brother of Gwen (Ashley) Syper of Jamestown;
grandson of Evelyn (late Hugh) Sample of Gerry, and George (Frieda) Dewey of Jamestown.
Also survived by aunts, uncles a niece and nephew.

Samuelson, Helen K.
Helen K. Samuelson, 93, of 303 W. Fifth St. passed away at 9 p.m. Saturday (Dec.
10, 2011) in the Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.
A lifelong area resident she was born Oct. 8, 1918, in Jamestown, N.Y., a
daughter of the late Charles and Ida Johnson Hedlund.
She was a Licensed Practical Nurse working as a private care nurse for many years.
Surviving is a daughter Patricia Allen of Clemons, N.C.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar L. Samuelson, and a son, Brian
L. Samuelson.
A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Visitation
will not be observed.

Sander, Rosa J.
Rosa J. Sander, 92, of 418 Colfax St., formerly of 239 State St., died at 12:20 a.m.
Friday (Nov. 11, 2011), in WCA Hospital.
She was born Sept. 26, 1919, in Galizien, Germany, the daughter of Johann and Katerina
Zimmerman Gross.
Rosa was a U.S. resident since 1952, and a Jamestown resident since 1953. She was an
active member of the New Apostolic Church in Jamestown.
Her joys were her church, her family, her garden, knitting and reading.
Surviving are a daughter, Hildegard (Wayne) Robinson of Jamestown; two sons:
Arthur J. (Carolyn Komula) Sander of New Milford, Conn., and Richard E.
(Marjorie Hunter) Sander of Amherst, N.Y.; eight grandchildren: Elizabeth,
Suzanne, Heidi, Rosalyn, Kevin, Stephen, Nicole, and Jessica; 16 great-grandchildren;
and two great-great-granddaughters.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Sander,
whom she married March 6, 1941, in Germany, and who died Sept, 20, 2000;
two sistersl and five brothers.
The funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday in the New Apostolic
Church, 314 Hall Ave., Jamestown.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home
and from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the church.

Bertha Laura Sandstrom, 88, of Jamestown, passed away Sunday (Aug. 26, 2012), in the
Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Center.
She was born July 14, 1924, in Mountain View, N.J., the daughter of the late Walter
and Emilie Jacobson Martinson.
A loving wife and mother, Bertha was a homemaker most of her life. She loved sewing,
knitting, and cross-stitching. Hand-made items were plentiful and beautiful. Bertha
loved her family and friends, had a wonderful sense of humor, and always loved a
good joke. She and her husband owned a summer cottage on Chautauqua Lake for more
than 20 years where many fond family memories were made. They later retired to Orlando,
Fla. Bertha moved back to Jamestown after the death of her husband.
Surviving are her five children whom she loved dearly: Carl (Sallie) Sandstrom of
Jamestown, Laurance (Margaret) Sandstrom of Bostic, N.C., Judith (James) Lester of Port
Charlotte, Fla., Steven (Penny) Sandstrom of Ventura, Calif., and Janice (Dennis) Roberg
of Lakewood; 13 grandchildren: Andrew (Tina) Sandstrom of Jamestown, Joseph Sandstrom
of Burbank, Calif., Kimberly (Eddie) Alacan of Florida, Melissa (Jay) Reed of Starkville,
Miss., James P. (Rachael) Lester, Kerry (Chris) Marshall and Kristin (Daniel) Mason, all
of Rumson, N.J., Heather (Peter) Hopwood of Texas, Tiffany (Michael) Stumbo of Fayetteville,
N.C., Matthew Sandstrom of Ventura, Calif., Dennis (Darlene) Roberg Jr. of Jacksonville,
Fla., Stephanie (Robert) David and Michelle (Caleb) Waite of Jamestown; 13 great-grandchildren;
two brothers: the Rev. Arthur Smith of Darlington, S.C., and Walter (Eleanor) Martinson
of Rock Hill, S.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 51 years, Carl
Adolph Sandstrom, whom she married Aug. 1, 1942, and who died Feb. 13, 1994; a sister,
Emily Hall; and a brother, Herbert L. Smith.
A private family memorial service will be held and visitation will not be observed.

Sandstrom, Charlene E.
Charlene E. Sandstrom, 85, formerly of Panama, NY, passed away at 5:15 a.m. Saturday
(June 23, 2012) in the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.
A lifelong area resident she was born November 10, 1926 in Panama, N.Y. a daughter
of the late Erwin and Georgia Shannon Sturges.
She was a graduate of the Panama Central School and was a member of the Panama
United Methodist Church.
She and her late husband Bill owned and operated Sandy's Dairy Farm in Ashville for
many years. Following dairy farming they owned and operated Sandstrom's Egg Farm until
their retirement.
She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother and grandmother who loved
spending time with her family. She also loved her animals, especially her dog "Buffy"
who provided much comfort to her following the passing of her husband. She enjoyed
cooking for her family and friends, playing cards, gardening, and helping her children
and grandchildren whenever needed. She was also an excellent softball player in her
younger years as a member of the Niobe Grange League.
Surviving is a son, James E. (Audrey Walrod) Sandstrom of Mayville, N.Y.; a daughter,
Shirley (George) Hedlund of Ashville, N.Y.; eight grandchildren: Sandra (Scott) Bailey
of Celoron, James Sandstrom of Aurora, IN, Shawn Sandstrom of Elgin Pa., Abbey Dyke of
Muskegon, MI, Molly (Chris) Anderson of Westfield, N.Y., Shari (Russell) Jamieson of
Jamestown, Shelly (Gary) Stevens of Hedgesville, W.VA and Darlene (Greg) Toole of
Brockport, N.Y. She also enjoyed her visits with Audrey's children, Telaney Walrod and
Trinadee Bunce. She is also survived by eight great grandchildren, two great great
grandchildren, and a brother, David J. Sturges of Jamestown.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband William A. Sandstrom
whom she married August 17, 1946 and who died August 29, 2000; a great grandson, Chase
William Anderson; a daughter, Jodell Sandstrom; a sister, Eva Leamer; and two brothers
Edwin and Merle Sturges.
The funeral will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Gerald
A. Haglund, chaplain of Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing will officiate. Burial
will be in the Wellman Road Cemetery.

Sargent, Virginia B.
MAYVILLE- Virginia B. Sargent, 88, of Maryville, Tenn., formerly of Mayville, died
Wednesday (June 13, 2012), at her home in Tennessee.
She is survived by two sons: Gerrold W. Sargent and his wife, Jean, and Jeffrey B.
Sargent and his wife, Linda; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five
great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Harley J. Barber Jr. of Mayville; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren D. Sargent; and her parents,
Harley and Ferne Barber Sr.
Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.

Saunders, Robert
Robert "Bob" G. Saunders, 72, of Russell, Pa. died Friday afternoon, Nov. 5, 2011
at UPMC Hamot, Erie, Pa.. after an extended illness.
He was born July 12, 1939. in Jamestown, N.Y., to the late Maxwell and Mary Cooper
Saunders.
He had resided in the Russell area most of his entire life. Bob was a 1957 graduate
of Warren High School and earned his bachelor's degree in engineering from the
Pennsylvania Military Academy. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, as a
1st lieutenant, serving with the 1203 unit as a Tank Commander.
He retired after 31 years service from the U.S. Postal Service,
working at the Russell Post office as a rural mail carrier. He was previously
employed with the former New Process Company.
He was a member of the Frewsburg American Legion Post 556, Clarendon
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 314, Warren Elks Lodge 223, Warren Moose
Lodge 109, Warren Eagles Aerie 313, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter
978, Chairman Club at Seneca Casino. He was an avid hunter.
He is survived by his daughter, Danielle Saunders and her two children:
Maxwell and Eden Goldstone, all of Oakland, Calif.; numerous friends:
including good friend, Jerry Come of Warren, Pa.; and a niece and nephew.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister,
Sally Saunders Printz.
There will be no visitation hours observed.
Friends are invited to attend a funeral and committal service at
the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home Inc., 304 East St., Warren, Pa.,
on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Marcus Briggs, chaplain of
the Warren General Hospital, officiating. Interment will be in Pine
Grove Cemetery, Russell, Pa.

Saulsgiver, Frances L.
January 3, 2013
A virtuous woman, Frances Laura Carlson Saulsgiver has passed away at age 94, and
waits for the return of Christ. She currently resided at Lutheran and was formerly
of Almet Avenue in Falconer.
She was born in Alkabo, N.D., to Scandinavian parents. She married Jacob A. Saulsgiver
in 1937, and raised six children, providing a great example as a wife and "household
engineer."
In the Falconer Community, she attended the Falconer First Baptist Church, with her
family and later attended the Falconer Wesleyan Church. She also had fun as the story
hour lady at the Falconer Library for several years.
She enjoyed playing the piano and organ, cooking and baking, playing games, writing
letters and poetry, reading and listening to Jim Roselli on the radio.
She had a great sense of humor and a special way of loving and encouraging people.
She is survived by four siblings: Betty Hitchcock, Norma Wait, Spurgeon Carlson and
Burnell (Esther) Carlson. She is also survived by her children: William (Netta), Larry
(Tracy), Douglas (Iris), Daniel (Carol) and Jacob Andrew (Sally) Saulsgiver and
daughter, Judy (Barry) Gilbert.
She was also loved and survived by her 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren;
three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Charlotte; her sister, Muriel; brother,
Gordon; her grandson, Jason; granddaughter, Denise; and her beloved husband, Jacob Arthur.
A memorial service will follow at a later date in the spring.

A celebration of life service for Frances L. Saulsgiver, 94, who passed
away Jan. 2, 2013, will be held Saturday, April 6, 2013, in the Juliet Rosch
Activity Center located on Aldren Avenue, Jamestown of the Lutheran Campus.
The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the center.
The celebration of life service will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the center,

Schifano, Patricia A. Gullo

Patricia A. Gullo Schifano, 51, of 500 South Ave., died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012,
in WCA Hospital.
She was born Dec. 28, 1960, in Jamestown, the daughter of Joseph and Dorothy Ann
Lisciandro Gullo. She was a graduate of Jamestown High School. Patricia worked for
Period Brass and then Gary's Car Star. She enjoyed spending time with her family
and friends, and deeply appreciated the love and support given to her by all of
them. Her greatest joys in life were her daughter, Chelsea and late husband
Anthony. She also enjoyed reading, decorating, antique hunting and playing
with her dogs. Patricia always kept her faith and her smile.
She is survived by her daughter, Chelsea Ann Schifano of Fredonia; her father, Joseph
Gullo; two brothers: Samuel Gullo and Joseph Gullo Jr.; and two sisters: Mary Gardner
and Gloria Gullo.
She is preceded in death by her husband Anthony "Tony" Schifano, whom she married
Sept. 11, 1981, in St. James Parish and who died Sept. 16, 2010 - they were married
29 years - and by her mother, Dorothy Ann Lisciandro Gullo on June 24, 2012.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in Sacred Heart
Church, Lakewood. The Rev. John Kuhlmann will be celebrant. Friends will be received
from 5 to 8 p.m. today (Aug. 30, 2012), in the Migliore Funeral Home. A Christian
wake service will be held at 4:45 p.m. today in the funeral home. Burial will
be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Schulenberg, Thomas H.
SILVER CREEK - Thomas H. Schulenberg, 66, of Silver Creek, died Tuesday, June 19, (2012) at
Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Dunkirk, on July 14, 1945, the son of Rita (Dillenkofer) Schulenberg,
of Port Orange, Fla. and the late Frank Schulenberg.
He served in the U.S. Navy and worked as a police sergeant and as acting police
chief for the former Town of Hanover Police Department, retiring in 1985. Mr. Schulenberg
was a member of the NYS Police Chiefs' Association, member of the NY Police Chiefs'
Benevolent Association and a life member of Samuel Cimino VFW Post #6472, Silver
Creek. He enjoyed building model ships and was an avid boater.
Surviving besides his mother are his wife Barbara (White) Cloud Schulenberg, of Silver
Creek, whom he married in 1977; a daughter, Paula (Jeff) Green, of St. Petersburg, Fla.;
a son, Jim (Tracy) Schulenberg, of Fredonia; two stepsons Doug Cloud, of Lackawanna and
Andy Cloud, of Atlanta, Ga.; and a stepdaughter, Lorrie Cloud, of Silver Creek. Also
surviving are five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation observed. Memorial services will be held from Riles &
Woolley Funeral Home, 39 Main St., Forestville, Monday, June 25, at 11 a.m., with
the Rev. Michael Stitzel of the Forestville Baptist Church and the Rev. Drew Stewart,
officiating.

Schwab, Robert Earl
Robert Earl Schwab, 88, of Falconer, N.Y., and Bradenton, Fla., passed away Tuesday
(April 24, 2012), in his home in Falconer.
He was born Feb. 19, 1924, in Frostburg, Pa., the son of the late James and Maud
Roush Schwab.
Earl was a graduate of Punxsutawney High School, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy
serving during World War II from 1944 to 1946.
In earlier years, Earl had worked at Spear Carbon and Summerville Brick Company
in Pennsylvania.
Prior to retirement he had been employed by James B. Schwab Company in Falconer,
retiring in 1986.
In earlier years, Earl was a member of Falconer United Methodist Church, where he
actively served on numerous committees for numerous years having served on the board
of the Methodist Gardens.
Currently, he was a member of the Kidder Memorial United Methodist Church in Jamestown
and an associate member of the Good Shephard Church of The Brethren in Bradenton, Fla.
Earl will be remembered for his pleasant personality and wonderful smile. He lead a
strong life of faith. He enjoyed extensive travels and enjoyed spending time both
north and south with family and friends. Earl also enjoyed playing card games and
gardening.
Surviving are his wife, Nora Mae Staley Zimmerman Schwab, whom he married Dec. 28,
1985, in Jamestown; a daughter, Linda Johnson and her husband, Lorry of Jamestown;
two grandchildren: Kristin (Chad) Goldberg of Panama, N.Y., and Carin (Jonathan)
Silsby of Williamsville, N.Y.; two great-grandchildren: Cora Goldberg and Elise
Silsby; four stepchildren: Linda (David) Millward of China Grove, N.C., Janet
(Richard) Nordlund of Mt. Rushmore, S.D., Jacqueline (Phil) Hemric of Greenville,
S.C., and William Zimmerman of Bradenton, Fla.; seven step grandchildren; and 15
step great-grandchildren; a brother, James B. (Gerry) Schwab of Gerry; and a
sister, Helen Dinger of Pennsylvania.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty L. Straitiff

Carl E. Schauers, 83, of 134 Ivory St. Frewsburg, N.Y., passed away at 12:50 p.m.
Friday (Dec. 2, 2011) in WCA Hospital.
An area resident for most of his life he was born Aug. 18, 1928, in Kingsley, Pa.,
a son of the late Amil C. and Mame Mawrey Schauers.
He was a 1947 graduate of the former Celoron High School where he was active with
the class reunion committee.
Carl was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from 1952 to 1954.
Before his retirement he was a press operator for Hope's Windows where he worked for 43
years.
He was a member of the Zion Covenant Church where he served as an usher for several
years. His other memberships include the Town of Poland Center Senior Citizens, the
Town of Carroll Senior Citizens, the Samuel Derby Post 556 American Legion, Frewsburg,
the Celoron Historical Society, the Town of Carroll Historical Society, the Local 470
Iron Workers Union and the American Association of Retired Per-son Chapter 334.
Surviving are his wife, the former Shirley L. Hultman, whom he married May 20, 1978;
two sons Alan L. (Cheryl) Schauers of Jamestown, Gary W. Schauers of Sherman; five
grandchildren, Crystal J. (George) Wynn, Nicole L. Schauers, Mindy Schauers all of
Jamestown; Sandra Schauers, David Schauers both of Sherman; four great-grandchildren,
Dennis L. Penhollow III, Tyler J. Apperson, Charles M. Apperson, Kylie H. Wynn; a
sister, Letha D. Abbey, of Jamestown; and a brother John J. Schauers, of Lakewood.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles E. Schauers; two
brothers, Richard Schauers, Jimmy Schauers; and his stepmother, Ethel Koresko.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Rick
Miller, Senior Pastor, and Pastor Steve Kilburn of Zion Covenant Church will officiate.
Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Schell, Frederick A.
Frederick A. Schell, 82, of 260 Schuyler St., Jamestown, passed
away Wednesday (Oct. 26, 2011) in Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled
Nursing Center.
A lifelong area resident, he was born May 5, 1929, in Jamestown,
the son of the late Axel and Edith Anderson Schell.
He was a graduate of Falconer High School, and a veteran of the
U.S. Army serving during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954.
Fred was a member of the Henry Mosher Post 638, Herman Kent Post
777, American Legions, Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, Elks Club in
New Jersey and was an avid coin collector.
Surviving are his wife, Beverly Crespy Schell, whom he married April 8, 1989,
in Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters: Kathy Vignola of Freehold, N.J., and Cindy
Schell of Buckley, Wash.; three step daughters: Dawn Larson, Diane Pavao and
Deborah Labhart; eight grandchildren: Julianne, Erica, Lindsey, Erik, Dana, Jane,
Ryan, Emily; two great-grandchildren: Joey and Alyesa; brother, Stephen Schell; and
a sister Catherine Schell.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Irving Schell.
A prayer service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. James Catholic
Church, Jamestown. A memorial graveside service will be held in Levant Cemetery
in the spring of 2012.

Schenck, Albert L.
Albert L. Schenck, 72, of Warren, Pa., died Friday morning, Dec. 16, 2011,
at St. Vincent Health Care Center, Erie, Pa., following an extended illness.
He was born Jan. 9, 1939, in Corry, Pa., to the late Paul Russell and
Lora Cornish Schenck.
He lived much of his life in Warren. Albert graduated from Youngsville High School
in 1959, where he excelled in football and track and field. He served his country
in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was employed at Lorangers Manufacturing
as a production manager for 40 years before retiring.
He enjoyed bowling, golfing, billiards and hunting for leisure. A 47-year
member of the Warren Elks, he also was a member of the Warren Eagles, Blueberry
Golf Course, and supported Warren sports though the boosters.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Mary Dangelo Schenck, whom he married Sept. 14,
1963, in Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church; three children: Lori Moorman and
her husband, Ray of Moon Twp, Pa., Pam Jameson and her husband, Ron of Youngsville,
Pa., and Albert M. Schenck and his wife, Erin of Darien, Conn.; seven siblings: Paul
"Junie" Schenck and his wife, Jackie of Bemus Point, N.Y., Phyllis Jordan and her
husband. Dick of Lottsville, Pa., Helen Kjornsberg of Lakewood, N.Y., Dorothy Matjoulis
of Jamestown, N.Y., Pauline Schenck and her companion. Bob Girts of Jamestown, N.Y.;
Ronnie Schenck and his wife, Donna of Lottsville, Pa., and Kenny Schenck of Bearlake,
Pa.; seven grandchildren: Samantha Jameson Cober, Matt "Al" Moorman, Nicole Moorman,
Jessica Jameson, Julie Jameson, Braden Schenck and Ayla Schenck.
In addition to his parents, Albert was preceded in death by a brother, Bob Schenck;
and a sister, Dorie Sechriest.

Gordon E. "Scrappy" Schermerhorn, 90, of Kingman, Ariz., formerly of Jamestown, N.Y.,
passed away Saturday (Nov. 5, 2011), in The Gardens Care Center, Kingman, Ariz.
An Arizona resident for the past 28 years, he was born Aug. 1, 1921, in the
town of Mina, N.Y., a son of the late Loy B. and Edith Martin Schermerhorn.
He was a graduate of the former Lakewood High School, and was a veteran of
the U.S. Navy serving during World War II and the Korean War.
Before his retirement in 1983, he was an industrial sales representative
for the Gierston Tool Company in Jamestown.
He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Kingman, Ariz.
Surviving are two daughters: Sandra L. (Edward) Dowling of Syosset, N.Y.,
and Nancy E. (Gary) Boynes of Glassboro, N.J.; six grandchildren: Kelly (Andrew)
Hickman of Fallon, Nev., Shawn Schermerhorn of San Diego, Calif., Robyn Schermerhorn
of Las Vegas, Nev., Brian M. (Marlys) Dowling of Guttenberg, N.J., Eileen K. (Charles)
Ratzer of Alexandria, Va., and Bethany J. (Jack) Wigal of Kingman, Ariz.; and six
great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, the former
Lillian A. Till Schermerhorn, who died Oct. 28, 2002; a son, Douglas G. Schermerhorn;
a grandson, Carmine DeFrancisco; two sisters: Helen Wellman and Martha Peiffer; and
two brothers: William Schermerhorn and Raymond Schermerhorn.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, in the Lind

George A. Schobey, 70, of 212 E. Elmwood Ave., Falconer, passed away Wednesday (June
20, 2012), in the Lutheran Home and Rehab Center.
A lifelong area resident, he was born June 23, 1941, in the town of South Valley,
the son of the late George H. and Rose Barney Schobey.
George was a 1959 graduate of Randolph High School, and was employed by
Monofrax-Carborundum for 40 years, retiring in 2003.
George will be remembered for his love and knowledge of movies, and he enjoyed
hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling, attending Friday night football games and
spending time with his family.
He was a member of the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, Randolph Moose and the Ira Lou
Post American Legion.
Surviving are his wife Mary L. Silva Schobey, whom he married Aug. 14, 1976, in
Conewango, N.Y.; two daughters: Denise (late Bradley) Luce of Frewsburg, and Debbie
(Robert) Bradley of Jamestown; and a son Leon (Shawna) Goerlich of South Carolina;
seven grandchildren: Heather (Rob) Pantojas, Alex Bradley and Autumn Bradley, all of
Jamestown, Celeste Luce of Virginia Beach, Va., Casey Luce of Frewsburg, Kaley Goerlich
and William Goerlich, both of South Carolina; three great-grandchildren: Gavin and

Scott, Margaret J.
Margaret J. Scott of 1855 Windover St., Columbia, S.C., passed away Sunday,
May 27, 2012. She was born March 14, 1917, in Bellaire, Ohio, the daughter of
the late Earl J. Johnson and Sarah Biggs Johnson. She was widowed from Bert W.
Scott in 1970 in Jamestown, whom for many years was employed by Jamestown Public
Schools. She had three brothers: the late Walter E. Johnson of Columbia, S.C.,
Paul R. Johnson of Bellaire, Ohio, and Ellis L. Ross of Columbus, Ohio.
She was a 1935 graduate of Bellaire High School. After high school, she attended
Meharry Medical School, Nashville, Tenn. for awhile. During World War II, she was
employed by the Department of the Navy as a civilian working at the Ammunition
Depot on the U.S. Navy Base, Bremerton, Wash.
She was a 1959 graduate of the Jamestown General Hospital School of Practical
Nursing in Jamestown, N.Y. After graduating from the Jamestown General Hospital
School of Practical Nursing, she worked in the operating room at Jamestown General
until moving to Columbia, S.C., in 1972. She was throughout her nursing career a
surgical nurse working in the operating room. She lived in Wheeling, W. Va., for
years before living in Jamestown, N.Y., moving to Columbia, S.C. in 1972. She
retired as a civilian working at Moncrief Army Hospital, Ft. Jackson, S.C., as a
surgical nurse in 1982.
She was also active for years with the Mann-Simons Cottage and the Columbia Historic
Foundation during the Christmas season open house and tour.
She was the oldest member of the Long Creek Church of Christ, Longtown Road in N.E.
Columbia, where she has been active with the church for many years.
Surviving are her husband, Albert J. Scott of Columbia, S.C.; son, Albert DeWitt
Scott of Columbia, S.C., formerly of Jamestown, and a 1968 graduate of J.H.S.; Dennis
Scott of Fayetteville, N.C., and Debra Weaver of Charlotte, N.C.; grandsons: Sean Scott
of Hopkins, S.C., and Shannon Scott of Columbia, S.C.; granddaughters: Satin Scott of
Fayetteville, N.C., Ladonya Green and Shalanda Hooks of Charlotte, N.C.; six
great-grandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren; cousins: Carl C. Johnson of

Seastrum, William E. “Bill” Sr.
William E. "Bill" Seastrum Sr. 61, of 4 High Acres, Bemus Point, passed away at 6:20
p.m. Monday (June 18, 2012), in his home with his wife and son Steven by his side,
following a courageous battle with cancer.
Bill was born March 9, 1951, in Jamestown, N.Y., a son of the late Russell H.
Seastrum Sr. and the late Betty J. Spencer Seastrum.
A lifelong area resident, Bill attended Maple Grove Jr.-Sr. High School until he
enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps serving from Jan. 15, 1970, to April 15, 1975,
during the Vietnam War. During his tour of duty, he received the National Defense
Service Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal with one star, the Vietnamese Campaign
Medal and was an M-16 rifle expert.
Following his discharge from the military he worked at many different jobs throughout
Chautauqua County. He was currently employed by Jamestown Scientific in varying
capacities since 2005.
Bill enjoyed playing golf in his spare time. He was a member of the Jamestown Rifle
Club for many years serving as a junior club instructor and more recently as vice
president. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association and in earlier
years was an avid hunter.
He will be sadly missed by the love of his life, his wife, Sandra F. Patchen Seastrum,
whom he married Sept. 4, 1987, in Jamestown, N.Y.; his son, William E. Seastrum Jr.
and his wife, Laura of Tennessee; his daughter, Paula Jo Seastrum and daughter,
Victoria of North Carolina; two stepsons: Christopher Collins, his wife, Jennifer
and daughter, Moya of West Ellicott, and Steven Collins, his wife, Mary and children:
Madison, Emma, Max and a daughter due any time, all of Bemus Point, N.Y.; his siblings:
Russell H. Seastrum Jr. and his wife, Sukritta of Broadalbin, N.Y., Jo A. Nickerson and
her husband, Clayt of Jamestown, Irene M. Crosby and her husband, William of Randolph,
N.Y., and Thomas E. Seastrum and his wife, Debbie of Warren, Pa.; and many nieces and

Wallace R. Seeley, 80, of Canton, Texas, formerly of Blockville, passed away
Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, in Athens, Texas.
He was born March 12, 1931, in the town of Harmony, a son of the late Charles
and Marjorie Morey Seeley.
He was a 1951 graduate of Panama Central School.
On Jan. 4, 1951, he was inducted into the U.S. Air Force serving for three
years. One of those years, he was stationed in North Africa, as a radar operator.
He was awarded the National Defense Service Metal and Good Conduct Metal
following his discharge.
While living in this area, he was employed by Automatic Voting Machine
and later Agway. In 1978, he moved to Texas, where he was a self-employed
carpenter.
Surviving are his wife, the former Lois Sweet, whom he married Oct. 7, 1951, in
Little Valley; a son, Mark Seeley (Mariann); three daughters: Alicia Lamb (Mark),
Michelle James (Rex) and Kathy McNabb (Trevor); six grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty S. Lord.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Roger Seeley; a grandson, Kenneth
Reid; and a great-granddaughter, Jessica Roberts.
A private family service will be held.
Burial will be in Panama Union Cemetery.

Sellman, Ronald Gary
Ronald Gary Sellman, 67, of Jamestown, died at 6:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012,
in WCA Hospital.
He was born in Jamestown, a son of the late Kenneth Oscar and Evelyn Virginia Wennerberg
Sellman.
Ron was a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Army and continued his 20-plus years of service
in the Army Reserves. He had an honorable discharge and received the following medals:
National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam
Campaign Medal.
Ron met his wife while serving in the U.S. Army, and together they had their three
children while living in Vietnam. After returning to the United States, he was employed
locally by Flickinger's for several years and then by Crawford Furniture, from where
he eventually retired. He was a member of the Herman Kent Post American Legion in
Celoron.
Ron loved his family, war planes, music and dancing.
Surviving is his wife, Am T. Ding Sellman; two daughters: Deborah Am (Michael) Forbes
of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Julie Christine (Stephen) French of Warren, Pa.; a son,
Daniel Christifer (Jodi) Sellman of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and five grandchildren: Maxwell
Alexander and Benjamin Oliver Forbes, Tia Evelyn French, Troy Hunter and Haley Bryn
Sellman. Ron is also survived by a sister, Nancy Sellman of San Diego, Calif.
In addition to his parents, Ron was preceded in death by a brother, Allen Sellman.

Semon, Mark Donald
Mark Donald Semon, 51, of Brocton, N.Y., passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at his
home after an extended illness.
He was born in North Tonawanda, N.Y., on Dec. 30, 1960, the son of the late Franklin
and Celestia Mesch Semon. He had made his home in Brocton, N.Y., the past 18 years.
Mark was a retired corrections officer from the Lakeview Corrections Facility of
Brocton, N.Y. He also belonged to St. Peter's Episcopal Church of Westfield, N.Y.
Mark was an avid Montreal Canadiens fan.
He is survived by two brothers, Paul Semon of Erie, Pa. and Franklin Semon of
Reidsville, N.C.; one sister Mrs. Kathleen Heidrich of Emporium, Pa.; and several
nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Ronald
Semon.

Senick, RoxAnne Kruse
RoxAnne Kruse Senick, 58, died Monday, April 16, 2012, in Boca Raton, Fla.
She was born July 23, 1953, in Jamestown, N.Y., the daughter of Charles and
Jacqueline Bailey Kruse.
A Florida resident for the past 35 years, she was a 1971 graduate of Maple Grove
High School and a 1975 graduate of Kent State University.
She was a homemaker, wonderful cook and great entertainer.
RoxAnne had a passion for life. She loved to travel and see the world, learning about
other cultures and talking to everyone she could meet along the way. If you asked,
she would tell you she didn't have a favorite trip, she loved every experience in a
different way. She contributed to many charities and believed in helping others,
especially those less fortunate. She supported many animal rights charities,
including the Humane Society and World Wildlife Foundation, Cancer organizations
and organizations supporting veterans and service members.
RoxAnne was also passionate about her family, as her loving husband, Ken, can attest
to after more than 34 years of marriage. Her daughter, Stacy, inherited this infectious
love of family, and together the trio sometimes seemed more like best friends than
parents and daughter.
Even a spirit like RoxAnne's can only take so much, however, after seven years of
fighting cancer, undergoing treatment, and surviving multiple surgeries, she passed
away on April 16. Those closest to her say she was a fighter. She remained positive
and kept smiling until the very end.
Besides her parents of Bemus Point, she is survived by her husband and daughter;
and a brother, Randal Kruse of Boca Raton, Fla.
Funeral services were held April 20, 2012.

Annette I. Shaffer, 68, of 473 South Main St. Jamestown passed away unexpectedly
Thursday (June 21, 2012) in the emergency room of W.C.A. Hospital.
A lifelong area resident, she was born April 10, 1944 in Jamestown, N.Y., a daughter

She was a graduate of Frewsburg Central School and was currently working part time
at Kervins in Falconer. In earlier years she had worked for the former Crawford Furniture
and the Machinists Union.
She was a member of the Vietnam Veterans Club, an avid reader and enjoyed doing
crossword puzzles. She was a very sociable, loving person and was also very artistic.
Surviving are her mother Irene H. Gregg of Jamestown; a daughter Michelle Carlson
of Frewsburg; a sister Barbara Feasenhiser of Tallahassee, FL; and a brother Dennis
E. Gregg of Jamestown.
She was preceded in death by her father who died Feb. 8, 1998; a sister Brenda J. Iraca
who died January 3, 2011; a grand-son Jon Eric Carlson; her maternal grandparents Walter
E. and Mildred A. Harsen; and her paternal grandparents Lloyd J. and Anna Gregg.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev.
Mark Parsons, pastor of the Mayville United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will
be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Shanahan, John A. "Jack"
John A. "Jack" Shanahan, 91, of 425 Front St., died at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 1,
2013), in the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.
He was born May 27, 1921, in Jamestown, the son of John F. and Grace Lundborg Shanahan.
Jack was a 1940 graduate of Jamestown High School and served in the Merchant Marines
on the Great Lakes from March 1944, through December 1945. Prior to his retirement, he
was a bricklayer and member of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman's Local 24 for 66 years.
He was a member of Holy Apostles Parish Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Jamestown
Moose Lodge, Knights of Columbus, Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, Jamestown Musical Association,
Chautauqua Lake Fishing Association and the Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion.
Jack was proud of his Irish heritage and played the fife for many years in the St.
Patrick's Day and Memorial Day parades. He also enjoyed entertaining friends and family
with Irish and patriotic music on the Fourth of July.
Surviving are two sons: James W. (Gerry) Shanahan of Kennedy, and Daniel A. Shanahan
of Jamestown; three grandchildren: Paul A. (Janeane) Shanahan of Celoron, Tracey S.
(Josh) Tobias of Brunswick, Ohio, and James R. Shanahan of N. Royalton, Ohio; a
great-granddaughter, Gabriella R. Tobias of Brunswick, Ohio; and two sisters: Margaret
"Peggy" (Robert) Shanahan Bloomquist; and Joyce Shanahan Johnson, both of Jamestown.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, June Shanahan Carlson.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, in the Lind
Funeral Home. The Rev. Dennis W. Mende, pastor of Holy Apostles Parish, will officiate.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Shaw, Wilson W. Jr.

Wilson W. Shaw Jr. was born Feb. 2, 1924, in Jamestown, N.Y., to Marion and
Wilson Shaw Sr.
He attended Ohio Wesleyan University in the V-12 program, serving in the Navy in
the Pacific during World War II as a lieutenant. He graduated medical school from
the University at Buffalo on the GI bill.
He served residency at Beverly Hospital in Beverly, Mass. His surgical residency was
at the Meyer Memorial Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y.
He met his future wife, Shirley Schoenfeld, while working as a garbage man in Chautauqua,
N.Y. They married in 1949, and were married for over 62 years at the time of his
passing. He and Shirley raised five wonderful daughters: Susan, Hannah, Carrie, Rebecca
and Molly, of whom he was very proud.
Will began his surgical career in Jamestown. He volunteered to go to Vietnam. He served
in Da Nang at a provincial hospital. He brought back many of the skills he learned
in Vietnam to help develop a countywide emergency service response program.
After moving to Spokane in 1979, Will worked for the Veterans Administration after
a successful career in Jamestown, N.Y. He retired as the chief of surgery from the VA.
In retirement, Will pursued many additional interests, including learning to
play the cello, flytying, bonsai and lots of skiing and fishing. He loved sailing
and taught his daughters how to crew. He was also a potter and tried to teach
his girls to throw. Although none of them caught on, they all enjoyed the ceramic
bowls he gave as gifts.
After moving to Spokane, he continued to go back to his friend's hunting camp in
Pennsylvania in the fall. Will was active in community theater, both in the Jamestown
Little Theater, the Spokane Rogue Players and Spokane Civic Theater, playing a variety
of lead roles. His favorite role was as King Henry II in "The Lion in Winter," while
living in Jamestown.
He was active in the Inland Empire MG Classics Club and restored a 1959 MGA. He loved
fly fishing and was a member of the Inland Empire Fly Fishing Club and the Spokane Fly
Fishers. He was a lifelong swimmer and skier. He finally hung up his skis at age 86 after
membership in both the Prime Timers ski club and the 80+ ski club.
Will and Shirley spent many a fine weekend in their small red trailer fishing in
Washington, Idaho and Montana. Will loved his wife, children, grandchildren, neighbors and his country.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Margaret.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughters: Susan (Rick) Turnquist, Hannah (Joel)
Szymczak, Carrie (Kenyon) Fields, Rebecca (Mike Tones) Shaw, and Molly Shaw; grandchildren:
Brian, Matthew, Katherine, Nicole, Jacob, Emily and Anne.
Cremation has taken place. Inurnment will be at the Sunset Hills Memorial Gardens in
Jamestown, N.Y.

Shear, Rachael E (Tenhuisen)
Rachael E. (Tenhuisen) Shear, age 91, passed away peacefully at Tidewell Hospice
and Palliative Care in Bradenton Fla., on June 13, 2012.
She was born Aug. 29, 1920, in Fredonia, N.Y., daughter of Lester and Mae Morse. Formerly
of Sherman, N.Y., she moved to Florida in 1969 where she became a certified nurses'
aide. In her later years she made her home with her daughter Linda Grahman Pettit
in Bradenton, Fla. She was a member of the New Life Church of Bradenton, Fla.
She was survived by daughters Catherine Bemis of Bradenton, Fla., Peggy (Art) Amidon,
of Portland, N.Y., Linda Graham (Jerry) Pettit of Bradenton, Fla. and Melvia (Richard)
Mellors, of Ripley, N.Y. She was the proud grandmother of: Christine Bemis, Tracy
Blakeslee, Trina Boise, Tammy Austin, Troy Bemis, April Shreve, Brenda Rizzo, Greg
Amidon, David Rossler Wayne Rossler, Janice Sorenson, Paula Nufher, Michele Kurtich,
George Kurtich and Kristie Parnell. Many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren,
step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter Mae Louise Tenhuisen in 1945; her
three brothers; Melvin Morse, Calvin Morse and Barney Lewis; her three sisters,
Marjorie Jackson, Mildred Morse and Lucile Fisher; as well as by her husbands:
Melvin Tenhuisen, Donald Stapleton and Charles Shear; and by her grandsons Brian
and Timothy Bemis.
A memorial service will be held at the New Life Church in Bradenton Fla., at a
later date.

Sheline, Bernice M. (Wade)
Bernice M. (Wade) Sheline, 90, of Jamestown passed away Dec. 20, 2011 at WCA
Hospital.
Bernice was born in Corry, Pa., on Feb. 28, 1921, the daughter of Edna McCray
Wade and Charlie Wade.
She attended Corry High School.
She was a member of Zion Covenant Church, which she attended regularly until
recently due to health. Over the years, she was active in the church and served
on many committees; particularly the visitation committee. For many years,
she was quite active along with her late husband Ed at the local level with
the Jamestown Optimist Club culminating in an Ed Sheline scholarship fund. As
officer and representative for the Jamestown Optimist Club, they traveled for
many functions at the state and international level in the U.S. and Canada. A
member of the Antique Study Club, Bernice also enjoyed her home and gardening.
She enjoyed special moments with her grandchildren and being able to get together
with family. She especially enjoyed her Monday nights with her granddaughter
Katie, when they would critique her favorite shows - "Dancing With The Stars"
and "The Bachelor."
Surviving are her two daughters: Cynthia D. Conner of Jamestown, and Paula K.
(Marshall) Johnson of Wilmington, N.C.; five grandchildren: Dawn Nicole Johnson
of Rochester, N.Y., Melissa C. (Tommy) Chrisawn of Micaville, N.C., Katie O.
Conner of Jamestown, Trevor W. Conner of Charlotte, N.C., Laura B. Cobb in
Landstuhl, Germany with her Marine husband Andrew who is stationed there; and
her two great-grandchildren: Caitlyn and Darin Chrisawn of Micaville, N.C.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994, Edmond H. Sheline, whom
she married on Sept. 27, 1941, and their son, Larry B. Sheline, May 20, 1966;
her parents, Edna and Charlie Wade; brothers, Harry, Merrill, Philip,
Laurence; and sisters, Ruth, Marion, Helen and Frances; and several
nieces and nephews.
At her request, her body was donated to the University at Buffalo Science
Department. A memorial service will be held at a future date to be announced.

CONEWANGO VALLEY - Emanuel N. Shetler, 77, of 5782 Stoddard Road, Conewango Valley,
N.Y., passed away unexpectedly of natural causes at his son's home on Saturday May
12, 2012.
Mr. Shetler was born Nov. 29, 1934, in Ohio, the son of the late Noah and Lovina
Coblentz Shetler.
He was a bishop and member of the Old Order of the Amish. He was a carpenter and
furniture builder and owned a cedar chest shop.
He is survived by his wife, Lizzie Miller Shetler, whom he married March 25, 1999,
four sons: Isaac Shetler of Cattaraugus, Dannie Shetler of Conewango Valley, Johnnie
Shetler of Blanchard, Mich. and Noah Shetler of Neillsville, Wis., three daughters:
Tena Hershberger of Atlantic, Pa., and Barbara Miller and Clara Miller, both of Conewango
Valley, N.Y., 51 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, two brothers: Elmer and
Rudy Shetler, and six sisters: Clara Byler, Barbara Hockstsler, Lydia Kauffman, Esther
Byler, Rebecca Hertzler and Lovina Mast.
He was preceded by his first wife, Annie D. Miller, who died on January 25, 1998, a
daughter, Ada Shetler, and brothers Mose, Jacob, John, Levi and David Shetler.
Funeral services will be held today, May 21, 2012, in the family home, 5782
Stoddard Road, in the town of Conewango. Burial will follow in the East Amish
Cemetery, North East Road, Conewango Valley.

Shields, Richard L.
Richard L. Shields, 83, of Route 394, Kennedy, passed away at 11:03 p.m. Tuesday
(Nov. 22, 2011), in Heritage Green Rehab & Skilled Nursing Center.
He was born May 10, 1928, in Wesleyville, Pa, the son of the late William H.
and Beatrice O. Gray Shields.
He was a 1946 graduate of Randolph Central School. He was a veteran of the U.S.
Army Air Corps, serving with the Occupation of Japan following World War II from
Sept. 11, 1946, to July 24, 1949.
He operated his families Shields Dairy Farm in Kennedy for over 40 years. He
was campaign manager and congressional aide for Congressman Charles Goodell, and
was a bus driver for Jamestown Public Schools.
Mr. Shields served as justice of the peace and as a member of the town of Poland
Board from 1977 to 1983, and past commissioner and secretary/ treasurer for the
Conewango Watershed.
His memberships included life-member and past commander of the Randolph American
Legion Post 181, Randolph Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 6533, Randolph Masonic
Lodge 359 Free and Accepted Masons, Valley Consistory of Jamestown and the Kennedy
United Methodist Church.
He is survived by a brother, Jean Shields and his wife, Virginia of Randolph; his
companion, Madeline Brown of Conewango Valley, who provided much care and comfort
in his later years; nine children: Timothy Shields and his wife, Donnalee, Thomas
Shields and his wife, Lynn, Todd Shields and his wife, Janet and Linda Sickles and
her husband, Tim, all of Randolph, Terry Shields and his wife, Sondra of Clarksville,
Tenn., Cindy Talerico and her husband, Don of Camden, Del., Richard C. Shields and
his wife, Tracey, and Joseph Shields all of Jamestown, and Carolyn Shields of Falconer;
and ten grandchildren: Alicia Hatch and her husband, Mark of Jamestown, David Shields
and his wife, Andrea of Myrtle Beach, Carie DeBaca and her husband, Lee of Dover,
Seth Shields and his wife, Nicole of Randolph, Tia Dean and her husband, Paul of
Silver Springs, Md., Eric Shields and his wife, Jessica of Clarksville, Tenn., Matt
(Marissa) Shields, Jesse Sickles and Andrew Sickles, all of Randolph, and Carlyn
Talerico of Camden, Del.; and a step granddaughter, Terena Clore of Jamestown.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille E. Knuth Shields on Aug. 31, 1968;

Brandy Shields.

Shoemaker, Mildred
Mildred Shoemaker, 81, of Absolut of Westfield, 26 Cass St., passed away Saturday evening,
Jan. 7, 2012, at Westfield Memorial Hospital.
She was born Nov. 1, 1930, and had lived in the Stockton area all of her life. She
was a homemaker, and found great enjoyment in coin collecting and playing instant
lottery tickets.
She is survived by two sons: Jack M. (Deb Givens) Shoemaker of Stockton, N.Y., and
William L. (Carmon) Shoemaker of Mentor, Ohio; a brother, Raymond Pierce of Stockton,
N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jack H. Shoemaker, whom she married in 1950, and
who passed away Oct. 7, 2011; three brothers: John, Buddy and Gerald Pierce; and two
sisters: Pauline Hebner and Evelyn Whitmore.
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11 a.m., Jan. 12 from the Morse
Funeral Home in Brocton. The Rev. Larry Morrison will officiate. Friends are invited

Doris Jane Signell died on May 26, 2012, in Richmond, Texas. She was born on
May 29, 1931, in Jamestown, N.Y., to Lucille and Rudolph Sturzenbecker.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Corry Signell, parents and siblings.
She is survived by her children: Douglas Signell (Cheryl) of Cocoa, Fla., Kathy
McCall (Rob) of Key West, Fla., Corinne Light (Ron) of Richmond, Texas and Andrew Signell
of Las Vegas, Nev.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Roger Lee Silman Sr. passed away Jan. 3, 2012. Surviving are his mother, Joann Seppi;

Simmons, Miriam A. “Jerry”
Miriam A. "Jerry" Simmons, 92, formerly of Panama, died at 12:26 a.m. Monday, June
25, 2012, at the Lutheran Home & Rehabilitation Center.
She was the widow of Floyd R. Simmons, whom she married March 20, 1937, and who
died Nov. 2, 1998.
Jerry was born Sept. 5, 1919, in Ashville, N.Y., a daughter of the late Lyle and
Allene Phelps Schermerhorn, and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1936.
She had been employed by Panama Central School, working in the school cafeteria for
16 years. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, the Harmony Senior Citizens and
Harmony Historical Society, as well as the Panama Union Cemetery Association.
Jerry loved traveling, and enjoyed her home in Florida for many years. She also was
a great walker and could be seen walking often in Panama.
Surviving are three sons: James R. (Nancy) Simmons of Ashville, David J. (Linda) Simmons
of Panama, and Roy E. (Karen) Simmons of Groton, N.Y.; eight grandchildren: James
(Rhonda) Simmons Jr., Timothy Simmons, Rhonda (Charles) Dodson, Jolene (Jason) Ayres,
Wendy (Brian) Behler, Joshua (Heather) Simmons, Jenny (Adam) Kostera and Jacob (Heather)
Simmons; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother,
Elliott Schermerhorn; a sister, Pauline Simmons; and her granddaughter-in-law,
Dawn Simmons.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev.

Simmons, Richard M.
BOSSIER CITY, La. - Richard M. Simmons passed from this earthly life Sunday, March
24, 2013. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He passed away
peacefully surrounded by his family.
Richard was born Nov. 21, 1921, in Jamestown, N.Y., to Willis and Ella Simmons. He is
preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Janet; his son, David; his parents; and
brother and sister. He is survived by his children: Kathi Thompson and husband, Rocky,
Jennie Parrish and husband, Ben, and their children: Marc, Richie and Hannah, Donald
Simmons and wife, Lisa, and their children: Rachael, Ansley and Reed, Jeff Simmons
and wife, Connie, and his daughter, Danielle Larned, Richard Simmons Jr. and his
partner, Jeannie Wells.
Lt. Col. Simmons entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 as a second lieutenant, and
was assigned as a bombardier/navigator flying B-24's out of Italy and North Africa
during World War II. He flew numerous combat missions and unfortunately, on his second
to the last mission, he was shot down and spent 13 months in Stalag I as a POW until
the war ended. Once the war ended, he returned to the states and married his childhood
sweetheart, Janet McGee, and started their life outside the military in Jamestown, N.Y.
After five years out of the military, the call to serve was too strong and Richard
re-entered the U.S. Air Force as a captain in 1950 flying B-29's. Over the next 20
years, he accumulated over 10,000 hours flying B-29's, B-47's and B-52's in Strategic
Air Command. Richard and Janet retired from the Air Force in 1969 and settled their
family in Bossier City, La., where they spent the next 44 years.
A funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, at St. Jude's Catholic
Church in Bossier City, La., officiated by Father Pike Thomas. Inurnment will follow
at Hill Crest Memorial Park. The family will be receiving visitors at the church
from 1-2 p.m.
The family would like to express their gratitude to all of their father's caregivers,
especially Cheri Eldridge and the late Miriam Higginbotham, for the love and compassion
that they shared with Richard over the past few years.

Harold E. Sinsabaugh, a veteran who served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War,
passed away in Jamestown, at the age of 81, after a short illness.
The beloved husband of Carolyn Donnor Sinsabaugh of Jamestown, he is also survived
by a sister-in-law, Sally Donnor; nieces: Denise Boswell, Sandra Lydecker, Karen
Donnor; nephews: Charles, Gilbert, Geoffrey and Michael Donnor and Will Marconi.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Hattie Sinsabaugh; brothers:
Jay and Norman Sinsabaugh; and sister, Hattie Sinsabaugh Krauss.
A private service will be held with family members. Burial will be in Oakwood
Cemetery, East Aurora, N.Y.

October 16, 2011, Roselia Sisak, a former Jamestown resident, passed
away on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011, at the Heather-Knoll Nursing Home
in Tallmadge, Ohio, at age 91.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George; and son, Arthur.
She is survived by her sons: Brian, Bradley (Elaine) and Dudley (Lee);
five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and a private memorial service was conducted
at Christ Episcopal Church in Kent, Ohio. Final burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery.

CELORON - Helen E. Sischo, 58 of Celeron, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011, at UPMC Hamot,
Erie, Pa.
She was born Oct. 21, 1953, in Jamestown, the daughter of the late Ivan E. Sischo
and Elizabeth "Betty" Hoard Sischo Brooks.
She was a 1971 graduate of Cassadaga Valley Central School and Auburn College with a
degree in pre-school education.
Helen was employed for over 15 years at Truck Lite of Falconer in assembly.
She was an active union member. Helen loved to volunteer and was very active in the
United Way and Chautauqua County Board of Elections.
Sister of Joan (Clifford) Rock of Plattsburgh, and Kathryn (Dee) Tanner of Falconer.
Also survived by nieces and nephews.

Skinner, Edward F.
Edward F. Skinner, 68, formerly of 841 North Main St., Jamestown, died Friday April 27,
2012, in the Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.
He was born September 24, 1943, in Corry, Pa., the son of the late Basil and Anna
Thomas Skinner.
He was a 1962 graduate of Youngsville High School and had been employed by National
Wire in Jamestown. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed fantasy football.
He is survived by two daughters: Stephanie and Erica Skinner; three sons: Eric,
Evan, and Eddy Skinner; two grandsons: Kobie Skinner and Jason Skinner Jr.; three
brothers: Ernest (Ellen) Skinner of Jamestown; Clarence Skinner, LaVerne (Nancy)
Skinner, both of Bear Lake, Pa.; four sisters: Hazel (Dick) Carmen of Bear Lake,
Pa., Betty Skinner of Ripley, N.Y., Esther Jaggi and Marjorie (Charles) Kopta;
and several nieces and nephews, including Robert (Martha) Skinner of Sinclairville.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home. The
Rev. Samuel Shreffler, Heritage Village chaplain, will officiate.
Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery Frewsburg.

Sherman D. Sloan, 73, of 29 High Acres Drive, Bemus Point, died Monday Aug. 27,
2012, in his home.
A native of Dunkirk, he was born Dec. 24, 1938, a son of the late Wallace Sloan and
Viola Cady Sloan Fields.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving from 1956 to 1959.
He had worked for various companies throughout his career including Ring Punch and
Die, Roy Holcomb, Norgas and most recently as maintenance director at Greenhurst
Health Care and later Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing. He was also a New
York State certified water system operator for High Acres and Greenhurst Village
Mobile Home Parks.
In the 1970s, he coached baseball in Sinclairville, and was also a Cub Scout leader. He
was an active member of Charlotte Center United Methodist Church and was a former
member of the Moose Lodge and Cruisers Car Club, where his 1940 Dodge Business
Coupe had won several awards. He was a life member of AMVETS. He had a passion
for sports and was an avid fan of NAS-CAR, the New York Yankees and Mets, and
Buffalo Sabres and Bills. He enjoyed camping with his wife.
Surviving are his wife, the former Virginia "Ginnie" Johnson, whom he married March
31, 1989; two sons: Sherman (Londi) Sloan of Marshville, N.C., and Scott Sloan of
Marion, S.C.; a grandson, Dylan Sherman Sloan of Marshville; two stepchildren: Dr.
Kevin (Linda) Scott of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Sandra (Jamie) Carlson of Bemus
Point; a brother Howard (Rose) Sloan of North Palm Beach, Fla., and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marcia Sloan Hilla.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel
S. Rumfelt will officiate.

Frank L. Smeragliuolo Jr., 57, of 2011 Willard St. Ext., died Thursday, Dec.
15, 2011, in his home.
A native of Jamestown, he was born June 20, 1954, a son of Mary Margaret
Lesandro Smeragliuolo Pacitti Lensey and the late Dr. Frank L. Smeragliuolo Sr.
He was a 1972 graduate of Jamestown High School and attended Canisius College.
For many years he was the owner/publisher of Nite-Line Magazine.
From the time he was a toddler, his love of music spanned his entire life. He
played in various bands including Black Pearl, Linear Expansion and Frankie
Lewis Trio, and traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada.
Surviving besides his mother of Jamestown, are his wife, the former Susan
Allenson, whom he married Nov. 22, 1980; three daughters: Jamie and Gina Smeragliuolo
of Jamestown, and Sarin Smeragliuolo of Columbus, Ohio; a granddaughter Angelina
Teater of Jamestown; a brother, Donn Anthony Smeragliuolo of Lily Dale, N.Y.; and
a stepbrother, Anthony Pacitti Jr. of Jamestown.
Besides his father who died in 1975, he was preceded in death by two step-fathers:
Anthony Pacitti and Michael Lensey; and a stepsister, Mary Ann Pacitti.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in Holy Apostles
Parish, St. John Catholic Church. The Rev. Dennis W. Mende will be celebrant.

Harriett Rose May Bragg Smith, 92, of Jamestown passed away Friday (Aug. 24, 2012) in
Heritage Park Rehab & Skilled Nursing Center.
She was born April 15, 1920, in Russell Pa., the daughter of the late Levi and Nora
Bell Kingsley Bragg.
Harriett attended Jamestown High School and in earlier years was employed by Sterling
Furniture.
Harriett was member of the First Baptist Church in Falconer where she had taught
Sunday school. She had also attended First Lutheran Church in Jamestown.
She enjoyed crossword puzzle books and embroidering with various colors of yarn.
Surviving are her son, Donald (Isabelle) Smith of Jamestown, and a niece, Nora
Hardenger.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Smith, whom
she married Oct. 16, 1943, who died April 16, 1976; a nephew Charles Bragg Jr. who
passed away Dec. 8, 2011; four brothers: Levern, Emmitt, Henry and Charles Bragg Sr.;
four sisters: Mary, Olive and Clara Bragg, and Idia Head.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the First Lutheran Church in Jamestown. The
Rev. Daniel Nagle will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Falconer.

BEMUS POINT - Mabel W. Smith, 67, of 4946 Main St., Bemus Point, formerly of
Mount Pleasant Road, Sherman, died Tuesday (Nov. 22, 2011), in Westfield Memorial
Hospital.
She was born July 21, 1944, in Corry, Pa., the daughter of the late James I. and
Ruth Bromley Rooney. She graduated from Chautauqua Central School in 1963.
Mabel worked at Valeo Engine/Cooling in Jamestown for 36 years. She was a member
of the I.A.M. Union.
Mabel enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by two children: Christina L. Caskey of Bemus Point, and Thomas M.
Smith of Sherman; one grandson, Leighton R. Caskey and a granddaughter, Riley C.
Caskey, both of Bemus Point, and two additional granddaughters; five sisters: Opal,
Roberta, Ellen, Barbara and Shirley (Phil), all of Corry, Pa.; five brothers: Jim
of Corry, Bill (Marge) of Ashville, Walley (Marcela) of Corry, Thomas (Doris)
Jamestown, and Jerry (Kathy) of Stedman.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Harold D. "Pee Wee" Smith,
whom she married April 18, 1964, in Little America, N.Y., and who died Jan. 4, 1999;
and one sister, Florence Rooney Swanson.

Nancy Lyons Smith of La Plata, Maryland, formerly of Edgewater, MD, died at her
residence on Saturday, March 15, 2014. She was 72 years old.
Born on January 30, 1942 in Jamestown, New York, she was the daughter of the late
Betty and Percy Lyons. She married Adelbert Smith on December 27, 1980. She is
survived by her husband; her four children Diana Erich and her husband Dave of St.
Mary's PA, David Smith and his wife Sharon of Fairfax, VA, Vickie Hook and her
husband Robert of Williamsburg, VA, Suzanne Wood and her husband Kenny of Crofton,
MD; her grandchildren Tara, Nick, Cortney, Ava, Abigail, Noah and Nate; her great
grandchildren Aubrey, Taya and Mykel; also survived by numerous cousins, other
relatives and friends.

Robert D. Smith, 74, of Main Street, Bear Lake, Pa., died Monday, June 25, 2012,
at UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa.
He was born on May 1, 1938, in Niobe, N.Y., a son of the late Loren and Rena Whitford
Smith.
Robert was raised and educated in Niobe, N.Y. As a young man, he worked in Jamestown,
N.Y. at Webber-Knapp Company and a furniture manufacturing company. He then went to
work for Corry Jamestown Corporation in the paint spraying department for over 29
years. He later worked at Corry Manufacturing Company and at Walmart in Corry until
his retirement. Robert had lived in Bear Lake for the past 45 years.
As a youth, he belonged to the 4-H Club. He was a member of the Bear Lake Volunteer
Fire Department and a former member of the Moose Lodge in Corry. For many years, he
raised rabbits at his home.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death on July 8, 2008, by his wife,
Mildred L. Skinner Smith, whom he married Aug 17, 1961, in Bear Lake; five sisters:
Pearl Snow, Mary Smith, Isabelle Howard, Ruth Gleason and Lillian Gustafson; and five
brothers: Arthur, Earl, Lawrence, George and Loren Smith.
Robert is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Hancock and her husband, Robert of Waycross,
Ga.; two sons: Gordon Smith of Bear Lake, Pa., and Kelly Smith and his fiance, Crystal
Sheldon of Youngsville, Pa.; and two brothers: Willard Smith and Leon Smith, both of
Jamestown, N.Y. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; Jessica Hancock, Crystal
Wilkins, Hannah Hancock, all of Waycross, Ga., Heather Christenson of Warren, Pa.,
Ryan Smith of Bear Lake, Pa., Codi Smith of Celoron, N.Y., and Nicole Smith of Youngsville,
Pa., six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Word has been received that Robert P. Smith, 69, of Port Orange, Fla., formerly of
Jamestown, N.Y., died June 8, 2012. He was born Sept. 10, 1942, in Camp Forest, Tenn.,
the son of Gilbert and Mary Smith. He lived most of his life in the Jamestown area.
Bob attended Jamestown High School, served four years in the U.S. Army stationed in
Hawaii, and 22 years with the Jamestown Fire Department, retiring as a lieutenant in 1987.
He is survived by his wife, Trudy (Starstrom) Smith, with whom he would have celebrated
their 48th wedding anniversary in September. They have a son, Troy (Cherie) Smith of
Dewittville, N.Y.; two grandchildren: Nathan (Laura) Smith and Tiffany Smith and a
great-grandson, Gavin, all of Tucson, Ariz.
He is also survived by his mother, Mary Smith of Jamestown; two brothers: his twin
brother, Bill Smith and Greg (Lynn) Smith, all of Jamestown; and a sister, Tricia Dymond
of St. Cloud, Fla.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Lynn Smith; and his father, Gilbert S.
Smith.
After moving to Florida in 2004, Bob enjoyed traveling and walking on the ocean. He
received a lung transplant in 2008, and felt very blessed to have an extra four years to
spend with family and friends.

Sherley Emke Smith, 78, of Cherry Creek, N.Y. passed away Aug. 17, 2012, at home
surrounded by her family.
She was a charter member of Pine Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars, life member and
past president.
Daughter of Herman and Gertrude Wilcox Emke.
Sherley is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Melvin Smith; daughters:
Debora Smith (Monty) Meabon of Ellington, N.Y., and Melinda Smith Bigg of Summerville,
S.C.; niece (daughter) Cynthia (Dan) Nocero; half-sister, Rebecca Emke Pollino;
stepsisters: Voncile Mamon and Loveda Snyder; grandchildren: Pamela (Ralph) Shearer,
Joshua (Jennifer) Meabon, Trisha Meabon, David Meabon and Jason (Tanya) Meabon,
Julia Bigg (Richard) Padgett, Micah (Mellissa) Bigg and Amber, Ashlyn and Alexa

My mother was a stay at home mom. She was always there for us in times of happiness
or despair. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She took her
Grandchildren with her everywhere. When she and my father came to visit me in South
Carolina, she would bring at least one of my nieces or nephews. My mother made friends
everywhere she went and children flocked to her. She will be missed by all that
knew her. Your loving daughter, Melinda.

Smyth, Eva Mae
Eva Mae Smyth, 90, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend
and neighbor, formerly of 200 Gates Hollow, Bradford, passed away Monday, May 21,
2012, in Pleasant Ridge Manor in Girard.
Born in Bradford, on June 23, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Charles E. and
Ruby (Hullihen) Wolcott.
On Aug. 17, 1940, in Limestone, she married Charles E. Smyth, who died May 10, 1981.
She graduated from Bradford Area High School in 1939. She worked as a secretary at
Sunnybrook Dairies for 20 years then City Creamery for 15 years.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Bradford Chapter of the
Eastern Star and the Orak Grotto Auxiliary.
Family was the essence of who she was, she was the backbone, the heart and soul of
the family. She will be sadly missed each day, and she made each of her families' lives
a better place. She was selfless and always doing for others. Her home was always open
to all who entered and she made each person who entered feel special. She enjoyed summer
parties at their purple cottage on Chautauqua Lake and garage sales.
Surviving are two daughters: Shirley (Bob) George of Lake City, and Charlene Heidorn
of Jamestown; seven grand-daughters: Lyne Daniels of Millcreek, Leigh (Mike) Senger of
Girard, Loretta (David) Cummings of Edinboro, Tina (Steve) Chriest of Bemis Point,
Rhonda Caudill of Jamestown, Heather DeLong of Jamestown, and Anne Vander-walker of
Buffalo; 10 great- grandchildren: Alecia and Carley Daniels, Ashlee and Nicholas Cummings,

Sunday (Dec. 11, 2011), in the comfort of her home following a lengthy illness.
An area resident for most of her life, she was born July 28, 1942, in Pittsburgh,
Pa., a daughter of the late Thomas C. and Mildred Parkhurst Clarkson.
She was an active member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church, where she was a member
of the women's Bible study, the church choir, the mission committee, the lady
circle leaders and volunteered with the MOPS and AWANA programs. She was also an
avid supporter of the Jamestown High School Band Boosters.
She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother and grandmother, who loved
spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed
cooking and baking for her family and many church events.
Surviving are her loving husband of 41 years, Paul E. Snow Sr., whom she married
Oct. 3, 1970; her three darling children: John (Marjie) Wester of Sedalia, Mo.,
Sharon (Chris) Hubbuch of Kansas City, Mo., and Laura Snow of Jamestown; three
stepchildren: Bonnie Snow, Paul E. Snow Jr. and Janice L. Snow, all of Jamestown;

SOUTH DAYTON - Jane A. Snyder, 68, a retired nursing aide for DDSO, died Saturday,
March 30, 2013, at her home on Bentley Road in South Dayton, N.Y.
She was born Feb. 12, 1945, in Silver Creek, N.Y., the daughter of Kenneth F.
and Alberta M. (Butcher) Willson.
She worked for JN Adams for 19 years in dietary, prior to that she was a
homemaker and help mate to her husband on the family farm. A lifetime member
of the Dayton Historical Society, Jane loved to watch good movies, and enjoyed
the birds and flowers in her garden, but most of all loved to have her family
near by.
She is survived by her husband, Larry G. Snyder of South Dayton, N.Y.;

CONEWANGO VALLEY - Robert J. Snyder, 81, 12036 Myers Road, Conewango Valley, N.Y.,
passed away Sunday, June 24, 2012, at the UPMC Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa.
He was born Aug. 23, 1930, in South Dayton, the son of the late Louis and Iva
Bewley Snyder.
He attended school at the former South Dayton High School. A lifelong area resident,
Mr. Snyder was a 35-plus year employee of Spartan Construction in Gowanda, N.Y.,
where he was a welder. His memberships included Circle of the Soul Fellowship in
Russell, Pa., Local 17 Operating Engineers Union of Buffalo and Loyal Order of the
Moose Lodge 2273 in Randolph, N.Y.
He is survived by two daughters: Kathleen Raynor and her husband, Douglas of Conewango
Valley, Debra Hunt and her husband, Tim of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four grandchildren:
Jennifer Raynor, Kristina Peru and her husband, Paul, Justin Raynor and his wife,
Cindy and Heather Latshaw; five great-grandchildren: Matthew and Amanda Peru, Dylan
Bentley and Zackary and Olivia Towne.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Alger Snyder, whom he married July 11,
1951, in Cottage, N.Y., and who preceded him on Jan. 12, 2004; a great-grandson,
Anthony Consier; a brother, George Snyder; and sisters: Edna Nichols and Arlene Hess.
An informal celebration of life memorial will be hosted by the family at 6 p.m.

Donna Christine Solsbee, 69, of 166 Dunham Ave. Jamestown, N.Y. passed away at 9:45
a.m. Thursday (June 21, 2012) in W.C.A. Hospital.
A lifelong area resident she was born Nov. 23, 1942 in Jamestown, N.Y., a daughter
of the late Alvin and Gertrude Pearson Morey.
She was a 1960 graduate of Jamestown High School and had been employed by Falconer
Metal Specialties for 17 years.
She was a member of the Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion Auxiliary, the
Chautauqua Lake Fish Club and the Lake-wood Rod & Gun Club. She also loved to knit
and spent many hours working on her knitting machine.
Surviving are a son, Steven J. (Sheila) Carlson, and a daughter, Kerrin (David)
Carlson-Moffett, both of Jamestown; three grandchildren: Shelby Francis, John Carlson,
Mallissa Carlson, all of Jamestown; three step children: Yvette Solsbee, Lynette Carr
and Collette Keith, all of Jamestown; several step grandchildren; a brother, Richard
Morey of S.C.; and a sister, Linda Hedman of ME.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred L. Solsbee, who
died Feb. 24, 2007; and two sisters: Phyllis Plisk and Barbara J. Morey.

SINCLAIRVILLE, N.Y. - Michael J. Soto, 51, of 5 Reed St., died Sunday, Nov. 6,
2011, at Heritage Green. He was born Feb. 21, 1960.
Mike attended Jamestown Public Schools, and was self-employed as a contractor
doing roofing. He was a loving and caring person. Mike loved his mother and animals.
He is survived by his loving mother, Marcia R. Soto; and seven brothers and sisters:
Paula Soto, Patricia Bargy, Billy Soto, Vicky Norris, Bonnie Soto, Arthur Soto and
Robert Soto.
He was preceded in death by his longtime companion, Cindy Shunney; and his
grandparents: Florance and Marion Frary and Juan Melendez.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Migliore Funeral Home,
Nov. 11, 2011. The Rev. Cathy Smith, Hospice chaplain will officiate. Friends will

Mabel D. Spagnoli, 94, formerly of 445 South Main St., Jamestown, died Thursday, Dec.
29, 2011, in the Dibert Home, 484 Fairmount Ave., W.E.
She was born Oct. 5, 1917, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of the late Louis and
Pauline Michelson Schlote.
Mabel enjoyed music, crossword puzzles, walking and classic movies.
Surviving are a daughter, Joyce Moskwa of Jamestown; two grandchildren: Stefanie Reid
of Cleveland, and Kenneth Moskwa of Jamestown; two great-grandchildren: Timothy and
Austin Reid, both of Cleveland; and four nieces: Marie Gordon, Betty Dolan, Pauline
Krznarich, and Alice Schueneman, all of Cleveland.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Spagnoli in
1988; her son, Ronald B. Spagnoli in 2003; and eight brothers and sisters.

Spetz, Richard A.
Richard A. Spetz, 86, formerly of Jamestown, died Saturday (Nov. 26, 2011),
in the Geneva General Hospital in Geneva, N.Y.
A resident of Geneva for the past 12 years, he was born July 24, 1925, in
Jamestown, the son of the late Anton G. and Gertrude Spetz, and was a graduate
of Jamestown High School and Jamestown Business College.
Dick was a disabled veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army during
the Battle of Normandy.
A love of baseball saw Dick as a pitcher for the former semi-pro Jamestown
Falcons team. After his playing days, he became an umpire until his retirement
and was a member of the Baseball Umpire's Association. He was inducted into
the Chautauqua County Baseball Umpire's Hall of Fame in 1987.
In 1951 Dick joined the Jamestown Police Department, serving with them for 30
years. During these years he became a detective and later lieutenant. He then
worked for Jamestown Armored Car for many years.
A long time member of Holy Apostles Parish, Ss. Peter & Paul Church, he also
belonged to the Ira Lou Spring Post 149 American Legion and the Independent
Order of Vikings Ingjald Lodge 65. In his spare time, Dick was an avid bowler
and enjoyed golf.
Surviving is a daughter, Kathleen (Gary) Breese of Geneva, N.Y.; a son, Michael
(Joanne) Spetz of Winston-Salem, N.C.; five grandchildren: Curt (Sharon) Zdunski
of Falconer, N.Y., Kristy Spetz of Winston-Salem, Elisabeth (Matthew) Marsh of
Baltimore, Md., Amy (Dave) Cameron of Winston-Salem and Lindsey Breese of
Geneva; and three great-grandchildren, Jessica and Jon Zdunski and Kaitlyn Marsh.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene VanTilburg,
whom he married Feb. 7, 1948, and who died Sept. 23, 2009.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home. The
Rev. Timothy J. Hoyer will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service in the funeral home Friday.

Kerry A. Davenport Spiesman, 30, of Sugar Grove, Pa., died Saturday morning,
Dec. 3, 2011, as the result of a auto accident.
She was born Dec. 3, 1981, in Bradford, Pa., to Marie Wainwright Davenport
of Warren, Pa. and the late Andrew Davenport.
She has resided in the Russell area most of her life and has resided in Sugar
Grove for the past five years. She was a graduate of Eisenhower Area High School
Class of 2000 and earned her licensed practical nursing degree from the Hewes
Educational Center.
She was employed with Will Care of Jamestown, N.Y. as a clinical coordinator. Kerry
was a big four-wheeler enthusiast.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Raymond B. Spiesman,
whom she married April 19, 2008, in Sugar Grove, Pa., two sons: Andrew R. Spiesman,
age 4, and Michael J. Spiesman, age 2, both at home, a sister, Kelley Sheley
and husband, Joseph, of Winchester, Va., her father-in-law, Joseph Spiesman and
his wife, Jane, of Gerry, N.Y., her mother-in-law, Nancy Burnett and her husband,
David of Panama, N.Y., and her mother's fiance, Werner Giesler of Warren, Pa.
Several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles also survive. She is also
survived by special friends, Mike, Mary Jo and Devin Sharp.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents
Gladys and Glenn Wainwright, paternal grandparents Emily and Samuel Davenport, and a
cousin, Aaron Davenport.

Cora M. Weiler Powell Sprague, 86, of Bemus Point, formerly of Falconer, passed away
Wednesday (March 27, 2013), in her daughter's home.
She was born February 23, 1927, in Warren, Pa., the daughter of the late Ward R.
and Hester Hoskins Weiler.
Cora was a 1944 graduate of Falconer High School, and in earlier years had been
employed by National Worsted Mills and prior to retirement was employed by Cummins
Engine and Metal Tech.
She was a member of the Levant Wesleyan Church and attended Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Cora had a strong Christian faith and was ready to go home to her Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ.
Surviving is her husband Robert Merlin Sprague; two daughters: Paulette J. Joslyn of
Bemus Point, with whom Cora lived with, Karen R. Harding of Falconer; four sons: Thomas
L. (Jeanne) Powell of Frewsburg, Wayne F. (Sarene) Powell of Kennedy, Nathan N. (Amy)

Steven E. Sprague, 53, of 3245 Baker St. Ext., died unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 3,
2011, in his home.
He was born in Jamestown on Sept. 25, 1958, and graduated from Mainland Senior
High School in Daytona Beach, Fla.
In earlier years, he had been employed by Halgirson Electronics in Jamestown
and later by Westburgh Electric for many years.
A life member of the Falconer Rod & Gun Club, he had also belonged to the Jamestown,
and later the Celoron Moose, as well as the Chautauqua Lake Fishing Association.
Steve will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and the way he was always
helping people.
Surviving is his mother, Johanna (Tim) Holt of Sparta, Tenn.; a sister, Sandra K.
(Glenn) Kent of Sparta; three brothers: Randall A. Sprague of West Ellicott, Timothy
A. Sprague of Jamestown, and Daniel (Sarah) Holt of Wake Forest, N.C.; two step-sisters,

Marilyn Jean LeBaron Stanton, 83, of Russell, currently of Golden Living Center,
Warren, Pa., died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011. Marilyn was born March 29, 1928
in Gerry, N.Y., daughter of the late George and Mabel Fargo LeBaron. She was
a 1944 graduate of Cassadaga Valley High School. She was a lifelong resident
of Russell, she was the wife of John Henry Stanton whom she married Sept. 21,
1946.
Known throughout the area for her beautiful singing voice, she had been a
member of the Russell United Methodist Church choir for 45 years, also singing
with the Calvary Singers for 13 years traveling in the tri-state area sharing
her love of the Lord through music. Marilyn was a talented musician and
that talent along with her love for music was passed down to her children,
grandchildren and great grandchildren. She attended Praise! Fellowship of
Russell.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Evelyn Camfield,
Sherleigh Westley, Frances Bower, a brother G. Marvin LeBaron and a great
granddaughter, Kayla Grace Zwald.
She is survived by her husband, John Henry Stanton; a sister, Joan Imm of
Port Charlotte, Fla.; daughter, Trudy Haight of Russell, Pa.; two sons:
Bradley Stanton and wife, Annette of Russell, Pa., Dean Stanton and wife,

Addyson Renee Stappenbeck passed away on May 25, 2012, at WCA Hospital. She was
born Friday, May 25, 2012, at 12:34 p.m. to parents Timothy M. Stappenbeck and Jessica
R. Clark. She weighed seven pounds, one ounce, and was 18 inches long.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her paternal grandparents, Todd Stappenbeck
and Treva Vanguilder; and maternal grandparents, Dayle and Valerie Clark.

Jeffrey Stark, 58, of Snowbrook Road, Great Valley, N.Y., died unexpectedly on
Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at his home.
Born on Dec. 2, 1952, in Salamanca, N.Y., he was the son of Robert Stark of
Great Valley, N.Y., and the late Rosemond LeBlanc Stark. He was married on June
4, 1977, in the former St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Salamanca, N.Y.,
to the former Mary Jo Swartz, who survives.
He was a graduate of of Ellicottville Central School class of 1971.
He was co-owner of Salamanca Area Beverage Company, Little Valley, N.Y.
He was a member of Holy Name of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Ellicottville, N.Y.,
the former St. Pacificus Church, Humphrey, N.Y. He was a civilian pilot and a member
of the Aircraft Owners & Pilot Association. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially
fishing and spending time with his friends and family. He loved his home and its
natural scenic setting.
Surviving besides his wife and father are two sons: Kevin Stark and Brian Stark,
both of Great Valley, N.Y.; three brothers: David Stark of Great Valley, N.Y., Terry
(Chris) Stark and Howard Stark, both of Salamanca, N.Y.; two sisters: Beth (Joe) Riethmiller,
Salamanca, N.Y., and Molly (Dennis) Brown, Jamestown, N.Y.; and several nieces and
nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Dana Stark on July 21, 1999; and a brother, Thomas Stark.

Guy L. Stebbins, 91, of Sebring, Fla., went to be with his Lord on March 29, 2013.
He was born April 9, 1921, to Clyde L. and Hattie (Prindle) Stebbins, in
Jamestown, N.Y., and had been a resident of Sebring since 1986, coming from
Sherman, N.Y.
He was a dairy farmer and a Pioneer Seed Company sales representative. He was
a member of Edwards Chapel United Methodist Church in Clymer, N.Y., where he was
the oldest living member. He joined Edwards Chapel in 1935 at the age of 14 and
remained a member for the next 78 years. A devoted Christian and church member, he
had served as a deacon, a member of the United Methodist Men's Prayer Breakfast
and enjoyed the music of the church, having sung in a quartet and in the choir.
He attended Grace Church of Sebring and enjoyed attending the Senior Center
on Sebring Parkway.
He is survived by his wife, Opal Hickman-Stebbins, whom he married on May 15,
2010; daughter, Joanna (Gordon) Dahlbeck, Lakewood, N.Y.; sister, Norma Hewes,
Mayville, N.Y.; granddaughters: Sherry Mettlen and Rhonda Johnson; and
great-grandchildren: Brandi and Brandon. He was predeceased by his first wife
of 66 years, Helen Wolf Stebbins; and sons: Bruce and John Stebbins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at

Patricia J. Stelmack, 63, of Fredonia, died Sunday evening, June 24, 2012, at UPMC Hamot
Hospital, following a battle with cancer.
She was born Jan. 2, 1949, in Dunkirk, the daughter of Edward and Betty (Jarvis)
Brisky of Fredonia.
She was a retired employee of National Fuel in Dunkirk, and at one time an employee
of the former AJ Wahl in Brocton.
Her memberships include Blessed Mary Angela Parish Church of St. Hedwig, the
Kosciuszko Polish Home, Sheridan Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Cassadaga
Legion Auxiliary, Beaver Club, Moose Club, Dom Polski Club, and was also a die-hard
Bills fan and member of the Buffalo Bills Booster Club.
An outdoors person, Pat enjoyed playing golf, and most of all her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband of 43 years, James D.
Stelmack, whom she married July 6, 1968; sons: James C. (Elizabeth) Stelmack of
Dunkirk, and Joshua R. (Tenniel) Stel-mack of Frewsburg; grandchildren: Lauren,
Meredith, Kole and Braelyn and Presleigh; a brother, Edward J. (Margaret) Brisky
of Arkwright; and along with several nieces and nephews.

Stetson, Georgianna Farver
Georgianna Farver Stetson, 85, of Westfield, N. Y., passed away Tuesday, Nov.
22, 2011, in Westfield, following a long battle with lung disease.
She was born on Sept. 26, 1926, in Erie, Pa., a daughter of the late Harley
(Park) and Anna Lillian Adler Farver.
Georgianna loved her family, as it was the most important thing in her life
and was loved in return by so many. She blessed her family and many others
with love, her teaching and her guidance.
She grew up in North East, Pa., and raised her family in Findley Lake and
Ripley, N.Y. After retiring, she and her husband, Carlton moved to Westfield,
N.Y. Georgianna worked hard all her life in and out of her home. She worked
in various clerking positions and retired from the office of Roger Hammer Esq.
in Westfield, N.Y., as a legal assistant and secretary.
Over the years, Georgianna was actively involved in the Acacia Chapter Order
of the Eastern Star, Zem Zem Shrineladies, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was
a member of the Westfield United Methodist Church and a past member of the
Ripley Presbyterian Church. Georgianna enjoyed her hobbies of knitting and

Georgianna is survived by her husband of 65 years, Carlton G. Stetson, whom
she married Dec. 29, 1945; a daughter, Catherine Deuink and her husband, William
of Clymer, N.Y.; three sons: John Stetson and his wife, Chris of North East,
James Stetson of North East, Pa., and Carter Stetson and his wife, Lynn of
Westfield, N.Y. Also survived by seven grandchildren: Julie (Deuink) Burrelli,
Jill (Deuink) Pace, Scott Stetson, Shannon Bannister, Abigail Stetson, Lindsay
Stetson and Garrett Stetson; and seven great-grandchildren: Katelyn, Cassidy
and Isabella Burrelli, Michaela and William Pace and Tyler and Haden Stetson.
Also survived by a sister Eleanor (Farver) Ball of Saegertown, Pa.; and many
nieces and nephews.

Stevens, Carl Joseph ‘‘Steve’’ Jr.
Sept. 9, 1945 to Nov.1, 2011
Carl was born in Los Angeles, Calif., to Carl Stevens and Esther M. Malacky. When
he was very young, his mother moved to Jamestown, N.Y., taking Carl and his twin
sister, Carolyn. Carl's mother then married Bert DeVlieger and moved to Sinclairville,
N.Y. Later, the family moved to West Ellicott, just outside the city limits of
Jamestown, N.Y. Carl attended South- western High School.
Carl left school in the 11th grade when he was 17, and enlisted in the Naval
Reserves in October 1962. He completed training as a corpsman at the U.S. Naval
Hospital Corps School in Great Lakes, Ill., in 1964.
His first tour of duty was aboard the USS Hancock. The Hancock was stationed
off the coast of Vietnam from September 1965 to September 1966. Carl volunteered
for a second tour of duty as a combat corpsman because he believed that was what
God wanted him to do. He was attached to the 2nd Battalion 3rd, Marines G
Company. He was in a group of 275 corpsmen trained at Camp Pendleton, Calif.,
all of whom were sent to Vietnam in November 1966. In that group of corpsmen,
208 were killed and 33 were wounded. Carl was wounded five times in Vietnam
and was awarded two Purple Hearts. He also received the Navy Commendation Medal
for heroic achievement. Carl refused a third Purple Heart, which would have
allowed him to be sent home, because he wanted to continue serving with his
combat comrades.
Carl was discharged from active duty in 1968 while stationed in San Diego,
Calif. There he met his future wife, Mary Clark. Carl attended San Diego Adult
High School, where he earned his high school diploma.
Carl and Mary were married on July 31, 1970, in San Diego. Shortly after
their marriage, they moved to Jamestown, N.Y. Carl worked at WCA Hospital as
a surgical technician while he pursued his registered nurse degree at Jamestown
Community College.
During this time, Carl and Mary purchased land in Niobe, N.Y., where they
personally built their own house. Their daughter, Kellie Suzanne, was born
in 1974 and son, James Allen, in 1977.
In 1980, the Stevens family moved to Modesto, Calif., where Carl took a
position as a coronary care nurse. He later transferred to the operating
room where he was promoted to orthopedic team leader.
Because there was not a local Navy Reserve unit, Carl transferred to the
Army Reserves and proceeded to report to a MASH unit in Oakland, Calif.
In July 1985, Carl suffered a near-fatal heart attack while preparing for
a major surgical procedure at the hospital. Upon recovery, he returned to
work, but continuing heart problems forced him to take a medical retirement
in 1991. He received an honorable discharge from both the Navy Reserves
and the Army Reserves. While living in Modesto, Carl was involved in the
VA support group that held panel discussions at Modesto Community College
to educate students in the history and experiences of the Vietnam conflict.
In 1990, Carl and Mary and a dear friend purchased Country Peddler Gift Store,
in Jamestown, Calif. Carl made many of the unique, handcrafted items that
were sold at the store.
Carl's favorite hobby was photography. He entered photos at the Stanislaus
County Fair in 1988 and won four ribbons for his entries. He also enjoyed
researching new recipes and cooking. He enjoyed doing counted cross
stitching, and making gifts for his family and friends.
In 1991, Carl began receiving his health care from the VA Hospital in
San Francisco. While receiving care, he participated in several clinical
research studies. He was involved in the study for the drug carvedilol, a
powerful heart medication that is now approved for heart patients.
Carl was preceded in death by his mother, Esther De Vlieger in 2005. He
is survived by his father, Bert De Vlieger; his sisters: Carolyn Smith,
Pam De Vlieger and Charlotte De Vlieger; and his brothers Robert De Vlieger
and Bert De Vlieger.
He is also survived by his wife, Mary, daughter, Kellie Crow. and son-in-law
David Crow, all from Jamestown, Calif. His son, James and daughter-in-law,
Rosa live in San Diego, Calif. Carl has four grandchildren: Sarah Crow,
Steven Crow, Brian Stevens and Allen Joseph Stevens.
A memorial service will be held at the Tuolumne County Posse Grounds,
in Jamestown, Calif., on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at 1 p.m. Pastor
William Allen Thomas, of the Harvest Community Fellowship Church of God

Stidd, Rozell Asher
Rozell Asher Stidd, 91, of 951 Washington Ave., Tyrone, Pa., died Monday, May 21,
2012, at 12:05 a.m., at Altoona Regional Health Systems, Altoona Campus, Altoona, Pa.
He was born May 14, 1921, in Guffey, Pa., a small oil-boom village on the Kinzua
Creek in McKean County, the son of the late Irvin ''Jack'' and Mildred (Pair) Stidd.
On Jan. 31, 1945, in Bradford, Pa., he married Audrey Gwendolyn Pollock, who preceded
him in death on Feb. 1, 1990.
From 1927 to 1939, he attended Kane area schools, beginning his education in
the Guffey one-room schoolhouse and graduating from Mt. Jewett High School, McKean
County.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force serving with the 432nd Fighter Squadron,
475th Fighter Group as a technical sergeant. He enlisted on Jan. 11, 1940, in
Harrisburg, Pa., serving during World War II in the East Indies, Papua and New
Guinea. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars,
the American Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Ribbon and the Distinguished
Unit Citation. Rozel was discharged on July 11, 1945.
Mr. Stidd began a distinquished career with the Pennsylvania Game Commission in
1946, in Lycoming and Sullivan counties as district game protector. In 1951, he left
the game commission to accept a position with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
enforcing laws and regulations in Kuskokwin River, Yukon River and Bering Sea area
of Alaska.
In 1954, Rozell returned to Pennsylvania and the game commission as district game
protector for Potter County and also served as U.S. deputy game warden. In addition,
from 1960 to 1962, he did undercover work for the Northcentral Region as part of his
duties. From 1962 to 1972, he was the supervisor for law enforcement for the southcentral
region of the game commission and from 1972 to 1978, he was supervisor of the hunting
license section in the Harrisburg office of the game commission. He retired from active
service with game commission on Aug. 25, 1978, with more than 30 years of service. He
continued his employment at the Best Western Motel as a night desk clerk for the next
seven years until his work began to interfere to much with his true love "fishing."
He was a member of the 15th Street United Methodist Church in Huntingdon, past president
and active member of the Retired Fraternal Order of Police Blue Ridge Lodge 45, Lewistown,
Pa., a member of Trout Unlimited, the NRA, Mount Moriah Lodge 300, F&AM and a charter
and life member of the Conservation Officers of Pennsylvania Association. He was a life
member of the Frank P. Hommon Post American Legion, Huntingdon with 60 years of continuous
membership, the Alexandria Sportsmen's Club, Alexandria, Pa., and a former Huntingdon
County delegate to the Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmen's Club.
In 2001, Gov. Tom Ridge appointed Rozel A. Stidd to serve as a member of the Pennsylvania
board of fish and boat commissioners, representing the fourth district which included
Cambria, Somerset, Blair, Bedford, Huntingdon, Fulton, Mifflin and Juniata counties. It
was noted in the article that he had fished in Alaska, Pennsylvania, Montana, Wyoming,
Idaho, Washington, South Dakota, New York, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine,
Florida, Quebec and Ontario.
Rozell is survived by a daughter, Mary E. Brickley of Jamestown, N.Y.; two sons: John
A. Stidd and wife, Ralda, of Scarborough, Maine, and J.P. Stidd and his wife, Connie,
of Huntingdon. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a
brother, Lewis Stidd and his wife, Mary Lou of Mt. Jewett, Pa.
He was preceded in death by two sisters: Dorothy Stidd and Ruth Solomon; and a
brother, Harry Stidd.

KENNEDY - Kay W. Streib, 70, of 930 Route 394, Kennedy, passed away to be with her
Lord and Savior on Monday May 21, 2012, at 11 p.m. in the Heritage Village Rehab and
Skilled Nursing Center in Gerry, after a courageous battle with multiple myeloma and
bone cancer.
She was born June 25, 1941, in Jamestown, the daughter of the late Charles Burton
and Florence Pearl Reynolds Wakefield.
An area resident all of her life, she was a 1959 graduate of Falconer High
School. Kay had been employed by the Chautauqua County Cooperative Extension for
26 years as a secretary from 1959 to 1985, retiring to care for her son as a
full-time mother. She came out of her retirement in 2003 to be the secretary for
Cass Creek International in Falconer, from where she retired in 2007. She was a
member of Levant Wesleyan Church in Falconer.
She is survived by her husband, James G. Streib, whom she married May 6, 1961,
in the Kennedy Baptist Church; a son, James William Streib of Buffalo; sister-in-law,
Grace Wake-field of Falconer; a brother-in-law and his wife, William and Joyce Streib
of Saginaw, Mich.; and 11 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother Florence in 1995 and her father Charles in
1999; a sister, Bonnie Beish in 2009; and a brother, David Wakefield in 2011.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday in
the Van Rensselaer and Son Funeral Home, 14 Church St., Randolph, from where funeral

Terry L. Studd, 65, of 144 Clifton Ave., Jamestown, passed away unexpectedly at 7
p.m. Wednesday (May 30, 2012), in his home.
A lifelong area resident, he was born Nov. 15, 1946, in Jamestown, N.Y., a son
of Warren E. Studd and the late Freda Barnes Studd.
He was a 1965 graduate of Jamestown High School, and was a veteran of the U.S.
Army, where he served two tours of duty during the Vietnam War.
Before his retirement, he owned and operated Studd Refrigeration Company, a business
that was started by his father and where Terry had worked for more than 40 years.
As a proud veteran he was a member of the AM-VETS, the Jamestown Vietnam Veterans
Association and the Bemus Point Post 557 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband and father who loved
spending time at his camp and being outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Surviving are his father of Jamestown; his wife, Lucy M. Tota Studd, whom he married
June 9, 1973; a son, Andrew L. Studd of Jamestown; two sisters: Doris Blashaw and Lynn
McDonald, both of Jamestown. He was also very close to his nieces and nephews and
enjoyed the time he spent with them.

Robert Bruce Summerfield Jr., 66, of 14 Seymour St., Jamestown, passed away Tuesday
(Jan. 1, 2013), in Heritage Park Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center.
Known to many as "Half Pint." Bruce was born April 10, 1946, in Jamestown, the son
of the late Robert Bruce Summerfield Sr. and Louise "Peg" Nolan Summerfield.
He is survived by his companion; Pamela Penhollow, with whom he shared a home; two
children: Scott Larson of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Toni Carvella of Jamestown; five
grandchildren; a sister, Peggy (Don) Steward of Conewango Valley; two brothers: Donald
Summerfield of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Jerry Lee (Nancy) Summerfield of Oklahoma
City; 11 nieces and nephews; and 21 great-nieces and nephews.
Bruce attended Falconer Central School, and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp.
He was a retired truck driver, having worked for numerous trucking companies over
the years. He was a member of the Celeron Moose Lodge and Brothers by Choice Motorcycle
Club. Bruce enjoyed NASCAR and his Harley Davidson motorcycles.
He was preceded in death his father, Robert Bruce "Red" Summerfield Sr. on May 25,
1996; his mother, Louise Peg Summerfield on July 18, 2012; and an infant sister,
Geraldine Summerfield in 1953.

DEWITTVILLE - James Joshua Sundlov, 62, of Dewittville passed away unexpectedly
at home on December 29, 2011.
Jim was the youngest of eight children, born to the late Elov C. and Mabel E. Johnson
Sundlov on August 6, 1949.
He was a 1967 graduate of Mayville Central School.
Jim was a former employee of Falconer Glass, Asplundh Tree Service and Roberts Nursery.
He loved the outdoors and he especially enjoyed growing Hosta plants in the
greenhouse he built.
Jim will be sadly missed by his family and his dog, Sammy.

Sundlov of Lakewood and Daniel Sundlov of Dewittville.

Svensen,Lucille I.
Lucille I. Svensen, 94, formerly of Girard, Pa., and Kissimmee, Fla., died Thursday,
May 17, 2012, in the Dibert Home in West Ellicott.
She was born May 28, 1917, in Elk Creek Township, Pa., the daughter of the late
Adam and Floy Tozier Hershelman.
Lucille was a 1935 graduate of Fairview High School. Prior to retirement, she was
employed at Erie Insurance Exchange, and previously at the Boston Store in Erie. She
had been an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as past worthy
matron and as a representative to Canadian chapters, and was also a member of the
Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.
Surviving is her daughter, Carol Svensen of Jamestown; two grandsons: Sheridan
(Maggie Evans) Smith and Alexander Smith, both of Jamestown.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Svensen,
whom she married Dec. 7, 1946, and who died Dec, 28, 2010.
No funeral service or visitation will be observed. A private cemetery committal
will be held in Girard, Pa., at the convenience of the family.

Bernice H. Swanson, 93, of 165 Aldren Ave. formerly of Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, passed away at 1:30 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 12, 2011) in the Lutheran
Home and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Feb. 4, 1918 in Kane, Pa., a daughter of the late Godfrey
L. and Florence M. Foust Benson.
Bernice was a 1936 graduate of the Frewsburg High School.
While living in Iowa for 40 years she had been employed by the Armstrong's
Department Store for 16 years. In her early years she worked for the former
Gretchen's Kitchen.
She was a member of the Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids
for many years and enjoyed traveling with her husband throughout the United
States.
Surviving are a brother, Donald E. Benson of San Jose, Calif., and several
nieces and nephews, including Randy (Tina) Olson of Jamestown who were
her caregivers for several years.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall A.
Swanson, whom she married July 19, 1941 and who died Jan. 23, 1994; and two
sisters, Marguerite Mealey, Alice Benson.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Lake View Cemetery.

Dorothy H. Swanson, 87, a former resident of Falconer, passed away Saturday, March 23,
2013, in Brandon, Fla.
She was born Sept. 24, 1925, in Jamestown, the daughter of the late Ivar and Helen
Gunnell.
A 1944 graduate of Falconer High School, she worked in the former Steel Partitions
factory prior to her July 13, 1946 wedding with the late Master Sgt. Carl L. Swanson,
from Frewsburg, N.Y.
Dorothy enjoyed her 58-year marriage with Carl, until his passing in 2004. They
lived in many places across the U.S.A., throughout the first 22 years of marriage
while Carl was in the U.S. Air Force. She always considered the Falconer area as
home, returning in 1959 and residing until 1985, when the couple moved to
Sarasota, Fla.
Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother. She
was known for her loving ways, giving spirit and vivacious sense of humor. She enjoyed
any opportunity for a family gathering, dancing, bowling, horseshoes, bocce, and shuffle
board. She relished the times spent with children and grandchildren during long walks
in the woods or along creeks, using her active imagination to cause each outing to
become an incredible adventure and long lasting memory for the participants.
Surviving are her children: Sherry L. (John) Mattson of Valrico, Fla., Carl Lee
( Patricia ) Swanson of Doylestown, Pa., and Dian L. Swanson of Valrico, Fla.; six
grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters:
Margarite Ellis, Bernice (Tudy) Woody and Jeanette DiDomenico; a brother, Herbert
Gunnell; and a great-grandchild, Brandon Mattson.
Dorothy will be interred in the Lakeview Cemetery with her late husband. Friends and

Jacqueline Ruth Swanson, 80, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Panama, N.Y., passed away
Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at the Legacy House in Ocala, Florida. Jackie had a great love of
pets, especially her dog, Billy Boy. She also enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and
spending time with her family, friends and loved ones.
Jackie is predeceased by her husband, Norman Swanson in 1999; her brother, William
Sard in 2007; two sons: Joey Swanson in 2001 and Douglas Swanson in 2011.
She is survived by her daughters: Julie (Bill) McClugage of Tarpon Springs, Fla.,
and Darlene Farley of Frewsburg, N.Y.; sisters: Patricia Dole of Panama, N.Y., and
Cynthia (Michael) Brunecz of Fredonia, N.Y.; brother, Michael (Luella) Sard of

SINCLAIRVILLE - Roger T. Swanson, 64, of Sinclairville, went home to be with the
Lord, Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, after a fierce and courageous seven year battle
with cancer.
He was born on May 24, 1947, in Jamestown, the son of the late Richard T.
Swanson and Beatrice "Betsy" Mason Peterson. Roger was a Chautauqua County resident
most of his life. He was a 1965 graduate of Bemus Point High School, attended
SUNY Fredonia and was a 2003 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Jamestown Business
College with an associate degree in business management and information technology.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict serving with the United States Air
Force from 1966 to 1970 with a tour in Thailand.
Roger was employed for over 35 years as a master tech engineer for Time Warner
Cable, the last five years in Wilmington, N.C., retiring in 2009.
He was a radio control model airplane enthusiast, a member of the American Modeling

Community Church.
Roger was the husband of 40 years to Sonja Johnson Swanson, whom he married April
24, 1971; father of Jennifer L. (Mark) Heath of Gerry; Christopher J. Swanson of
Hickory, N.C.; Katrina S. (Ben) Schemmel of Apex, N.C.; and Michael T. Swanson of
Jamestown; grandfather of Meghan and Shannon Heath, Matthew and Emily Swanson and
Lukas Schemmel; brother of Shari Swanson of Durham, N.C. and Joel (Shawnee) Peterson
of Tucson, Ariz. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Roger's life will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in Fluvanna Community
Church, 3363 Fluvanna Ave., Ext., Jamestown. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m.
Tuesday in Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate financial assistance with funeral expenses.
Swiderski, Margaret V.
Margaret V. Swiderski, 93, formerly of the Hotel Jamestown, died Monday
Nov.7, 2011, in Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing.
Moving to Jamestown in the 1940s, she was born June 13, 1918, in
Spring Creek Township, Pa., the daughter of Ralph and Gertha Adams Miles.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the T. James Clarke Box
Factory.
She was a member of Jehovah's Witness, East Congregation.
Surviving are a son Arthur (Linda) Bailey, Jr., of Pittsfield, Pa.;
19 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert "George" Swiderski,
Aug. 4, 1983; a son, Richard Bailey; and three daughters: Lois Bowers,
Janice Mihalco and Virginia Bailey.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Jehovah's
Witness, East Congregation, 180 Martin Road, Jamestown.
Visitation will not be observed.

ELLICOTTVILLE, N.Y. - Edmund Szpaicher, 55, of Donlen Drive, Ellicottville, passed
away Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, in Olean General Hospital.
Friends may call at the Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 411 Rock City St., in Little
Valley, on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012,
from 4 to 8 p.m.
